The City and Its Uncertain Walls

In a piece for The Los Angeles Times, Assoc. Prof. of African American Studies Renee Simms examines how the novelist Haruki Murakami grapples with the surrealism of the post-pandemic reality in his new novel.
"As we stare down social and ecological disasters, we need new ways to talk about what is real. Murakami writes most transparently about our contemporary moment toward the end of his latest novel in a reflection on the 'pandemic of the soul,'" writes Simms. "But Murakami never shows us how this belief in self changes the material conditions of either town. We are left to imagine what’s next."

The Logger Women's Basketball team is fresh off a major win, beating Northwest University 108–69 on Nov. 27. During the game, first-year guard Carmen Cruz ’28 scored 36 points and set a new Puget Sound Women's Basketball record for most 3-pointers in a single game by a single player. The team as a whole also tied the all-time record for number of 3-pointers in a game, making 17 of their 37 attempts.

Puget Sound will begin limited operations starting Dec. 23 at 5 p.m. Regular operations will resume on Jan. 2. During this period, faculty and staff are asked to help conserve energy by powering down and unplugging laptops and computers. Security Services staff will be on duty 24/7 during this time to patrol campus as well as to provide escorts and access to buildings. For security purposes, please have your Puget Sound ID card available if you need assistance to enter a building.
