Teaching online? You can keep connections strong virtually with a few simple steps |
Post regular announcements. |
You can maintain regular contact with your students through weekly updates, video reminders, and full-class messages acknowledging students’ good work.
|
Provide an open discussion area. |
This provides students a way to reach out to their classmates about topics that are not specifically related to a weekly topic or specific assignment.
|
Schedule an optional session in Zoom to do a live check-in with your students. |
Giving students the opportunity to meet with you in real time can help to build community in your course. Be sure to have some kind of interaction planned to keep students engaged.

Unsure about grade visibility? |
Setting a Grade Posting Policy
|
An important item for your checklist each term is setting a Grade Posting Policy. That determines whether students see grades as you enter them, or only when you’re ready for them to be visible. For details, check the Set up your gradebook tutorial. For a student view, select any student name in your gradebook and then the Grades button from the right-side panel.

Join Celine Fitzmaurice (PSU) and Jennifer Alkezweeny (Oregon Humanities), creators of the “All Together Now” community-engaged learning card deck, to explore participatory learning techniques for your classroom.
This workshop will highlight pedagogical approaches that foster democratic and inclusive learning environments. Together we will explore ways to equalize voice in the classroom (and in our session) by allowing for multiple ways to participate in the teaching and learning process.
