9 to 5 the Musical nominated at Enchantment Awards
On May 7, the cast of 9 to 5 The Musical traveled to Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque to perform at the Enchantment Awards, New Mexico's high school musical theatre awards. The Upper School's spring musical was nominated for Best Production, Best Actress (Lauren Hartzell '22), Best Actor (Michael Vimont '22), and a Spotlight Award for stage management (Mahko Haozous '22 & Hugo Underwood '22). Congratulations to the entire cast and crew!

Youth Diversity Conference held in Albuquerque
On April 23, Santa Fe Prep students joined other teens from public and private schools across New Mexico for the 4th annual New Mexico Diversity Conference for Youth. The conference offered a unique opportunity for students fighting for inclusion and social justice to come together, learn from experts on a variety of issues, and brainstorm projects to improve their schools and communities. Participants from Prep included Lucy Amarel '23, Arianna Giannelli '24, Annabel Leon-Lubowicz '24, Kaylee Logghe '24, Myles Nordstrum '24, and Atlas Power '22. Thank you all for representing our school, and thank you to faculty members Alex Vidal and Kristin Kalangis for chaperoning the event!

English 8 students engage in The Tempest-themed Cupcake Wars!
As part of their study of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Breshaun Joyner's English 8 students formed mini-bakery teams to design, bake, decorate, and display cupcakes inspired by specific characters, quotes, and literary elements in the play. In other words, food as literary analysis! The assignment culminated outside the classroom in a contest judged by members of the Prep community. The Grand Prize went to bakery team Typhoon Temptations (Tara Kurien, Sophie Bair, Kelly McDonald, Sasha Hirsch-Arnett), who will have their winning cupcake recreated by Adobo Catering and featured during an upcoming Prep lunch service! Additionally, $456 was raised in ticket sales, which will be donated to a charity that assists with healthcare access. Awesome job, bakers!

Geometry Honors students celebrate mastering the Pythagorean theorem
In Jewish tradition, a "Siyum" is a communal celebration to mark the completion of study of a Talmudic tractate. On May 5, Joey Reich held a mathmatics-focused version of a Siyum for the 8th and 9th graders in his Geometry Honors class to celebrate the completion of their study of proposition 47 from Euclid's Elements—a proof of the Pythagorean theorem and a culmination of the entire book. After students took turns presenting the proposition in small groups, they feasted on a cake impressively crafted and baked in the form of Euclid's Windmill by Mr. Reich himself. Congratulations to all!

Prep welcomes two new head coaches to its soccer programs
For the fall 2023 soccer season, the girls and boys programs will both welcome new head coaches. Rick Canby, who will serve as head coach of the boys program and coach the varsity team, caught the soccer bug shortly after moving to Santa Fe in 2005. In 2007, he began coaching boys and girls teams for Northern Soccer Club and has since served on their board. Rick calls himself an avid fan of Liverpool Football Club, and of its manager Jürgen Klopp's coaching philosophy. When he isn't coaching soccer, Rick is the manager at Christus St. Vincent Outpatient Pharmacy.

Adelyn Smith '07, who will head the girls program and coach the varsity team, grew up in Santa Fe and attended Santa Fe Prep for middle and high school where she played soccer under coach Rennae Ross for five years and won two state championships. Since receiving a degree in biochemistry and environmental science from Boston College, she has spent time back home in Santa Fe, where she coached girls teams for Northern Soccer Club while working toward her teaching certification, and in Jharkhand, India, where she spent two years teaching science and mentoring young women and girls at Yuwa, a grassroots soccer NGO that seeks to empower girls in rural areas through sports and education. After returning to Santa Fe three years ago, Adelyn joined the teaching team at Santa Fe School for the Arts and Sciences as a middle school science teacher and says she cannot wait to rejoin the SFP Soccer family this fall!

Prep students awarded for achievements in art and science
Our students have been busy participating in state-wide (and international!) science challeges and arts festivals. Below is a round up of some of their awesome results.
- Prep students received nine photography awards in the Lensic's Future Voices Festival, a collaborative youth filmmaking and photo contest featuring the work of approximately 600 students from more than 17 high schools across the state. Izaak Buetens '23, Joshua Durr '22, Cooper Francis '23, Kevin Granillo '22, Ben Haozous '25, Lusha Kovnat '24, Emma Meyers '23, and Yuto Oketani '24 placed in categories such as Animal, Street, and Portrait. In the black and white category, Isabel Voinescu '22 was awarded First Place!
- On April 25, the Supercomputing Challenge held its 32nd annual (virtual) Challenge Expo at which students presented their year-long projects to challenge judges via Zoom. Shrey Poshiya '23 and Ian Olson '23, along with their group members from Santa Fe High and Capital High, won the Environmental Modeling Award. Their project—Optimising the Geographic Location of Renewable Energy Sources—explored appropriate locations, countrywide, for the placement of solar farms for maximum efficiency. Congratulations and thanks also to Jocelyne Comstock, who served as one of the teams sponsors!
- Film Prize Jr New Mexico—a statewide youth film education program and festival—has selected Emma Meyers '23 to be part of a student journalist and documentary team at the Roundhouse on Thursday, May 12, covering the New Mexico Rural Summit. The group will be supervised by two documentary filmmakers and their coverage will include live-streamed interviews, roving teams of student filmmakers covering all aspects of the summit, and a "central command" from which students will monitor and deploy the filmmaking teams in real-time. Emma's short film Tuesday's Evening, which she wrote and produced, was featured in the Film Prize NM's 2022 Film Festival and is available to view on their website!
- At the Climate Innovation Challenge Showcase, the projects of 1,500 students across six states and two countries were celebrated. Of the 24 total Honorable Mentions for Middle School entries, 12 went to Santa Fe Prep 7th graders, including Gabriel Bleichmar ("One Tennis Ball at a Time"), Sofia Fuge ("Food Waste"), Adaiah Gonzales ("Electric Cars: Climate Change Incentives"), Archer Land ("Climate Refugees"), Quinn Levy ("Eat 'em to Beat 'em"), Anisha Malhotra ("Fungi as Fertilizer"), Ella McDonald ("Bioplastics"), Zai Moquino and Jia Lei Pfister-Paradice ("Wildfires"), Zahra Naderi ("Microfiltration"), Lucia Reyes Newell ("The Landfill Problem"), Harper Rosen ("Better Water Use and Plants"), and Tessa Tiegler ("Bee Gardens"). The top award for a Prep student went to Maelle Shapiro in the category Best Style: Presentation for her hand-drawn project Wood Paper Alternatives!

Thank you for the many responses to our request for supplies for the displaced UWC students and the Las Vegas evacuees housed at Glorieta. It is not too late to contribute—there are donation bins set up in the main lobby of the Administration building, and requested donation items include:

After a two-year hiatus, the sales from last month's Rummage Sale totaled $20,720.50! We are thrilled to announce that—thanks to the incredible generosity of an anonymous donor—the proceeds were matched for a grand total of $41,441! These funds will support Breakthrough Santa Fe and tuition assistance at Prep. The entire Prep community sends its sincere gratitude to the matching donor, the awesome team of parent volunteers, and to Julie Murray, who has chaired the Rummage Sale for six years. | POP-UP GALLERY SHOW SEEKING DONATIONS

| The Two Beanies Art Initiative TAP group is seeking donations of 2D and 3D art for a pop-up gallery show to raise money for leukemia research. Donations can be anything from photography to paintings and even sculpture. Contact Sarah Meghan Lee to set up a time to donate prior to Monday, May 16. The art sale will be held in the lobby of the Administration building on Friday, May 20 from 3:45-7pm, and all profits will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

This summer, 11th grader Dessa Monat and her mom Holly Morris will climb Mount Shasta to raise funds for Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (BCPP)'s "Climbing Against the Odds" campaign. The Meem courtyard garden is now brimming with keystone perennials, selected for their appeal to pollinators and suitability for Santa Fe's climate. During their April 27 meeting, the Garden Club, sponsored by Barbara Park, Master Gardeners Wendy Wilson and Stephanie Deutsch ’95, and student Lauren Gonze planted golden currant, bear grass, yarrow, nepeta, echinacea, serviceberry, and more. One of Santa Fe Prep’s community partners, the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding (NMCTR), is holding its 9th annual Golf Tournament to benefit children and adults with disabilities. Santa Fe Prep parents are invited to join them Sunday, June 26 at Sandia Golf Club for a Team Best Ball format game! Visit NMCTR's website for more information and to register.
Santa Fe Prep students have been a part of NMCTR’s High School Internship program since 2018, helping the organization with their School Outreach Program that serves children and youth with disabilties. In addition to working directly with children, students also assist with barn maintenance, exercising the horses, and fundraising—junior Indie Desiderio-Sloane's TAP group is presently working toward a $1,000 contribution goal for NMCTR's spring fundraiser!
