Joseph Martin (1740-1808) fascinates as a Revolutionary War general who worked as a negotiator to the Cherokee. Born in Virginia, later a plantation owner and member of the state legislatures of North Carolina and Virginia, Martin was also something of “a rambler, and a gambler, and a sweet talking ladies’ man.” His complicated domestic life and his concurrent marriages to Cherokee Elizabeth Ward and Virginian Sarah Lucas provide insights into the complications of Indian-white relations in early Tennessee.
