A Fellow Friend
As associate director of fellowships and academic advising, Kelli Delaney M.Ed.’07 provides students and alumni with the encouragement, resources, opportunities, and support to apply for fellowships. On campus, she enjoys talking with students, discovering what they are interested in and getting to know them through the application process. When she’s not helping Loggers land postgraduate opportunities, she likes to walk, garden, do yoga, read, and spend time with her grandchildren.

HACKS & CHOPS Maria Sampen, professor of music, is the Winter 2020 Susan Monahan & Mark Brucks Artist-in-Residence at the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival. Earlier this month, she performed a program of works by Beethoven, Barber, Beach, Marilyn Shrude, and more in the festival’s Portrait of the Artist recital.

Nearly 60,000 young people are incarcerated in juvenile jails and prisons across the nation. Henry Loran ’21 wants to change that. His internship with Pierce County’s Community Accountability Board has cemented his desire to study law and inspired him to become an advocate.

PUBLIC DEFENDER Celebrated poet, graduate of Yale Law School, and prison reform advocate Reginald Dwayne Betts delivered a powerful address at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan. 21. He spoke of the dehumanizing and demoralizing effects of a broken criminal justice system and shared his own experience of incarceration through readings from Felon, his most recent collection of poetry.
