Dr. Umit Tocak: Using AI and Data Analysis to Improve the Lives of Veterans in the Region

When you hear that Umit Tokac is not a nurse, despite being an assistant professor in the College of Nursing, you may at first be puzzled. But when he begins to discuss his research with clinicians treating veterans and others suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the pieces begin to fall into place.

Research Enabled Portal

Connect with industry sponsors for research and fee-for-service work

The new Research Enabled portal helps companies in need of your expertise for research, service work, and collaborations to pursue funding, and more, easily connect with you. Make sure you've claimed your researcher profile, entered any resources you have available for industry contract work, and set your communication preferences. Also, you can post your current ideas and projects that would benefit from industry collaboration and support (just keep it non-confidential) for companies to browse. And, if your business contacts want to contract with the university for you to provide resources or service work, send them to Research Enabled for quick, easy contract processing.
Research Enabled is a collaboration between the UM and SIU systems, partially funded by a US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration i6 Award.

NSF Revises Proposal & Award Policies and Procedures Guide

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a revised version of their Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 22-1). The new PAPPG will be effective for proposals submitted or due on or after October 4, 2021. Significant changes include:
  • A new section covering requests for reasonable and accessibility accommodations regarding the proposal process or requests for accessibility accommodations to access NSF’s electronic systems, websites and other digital content;
  • A table entitled, NSF Pre-award and Post-award Disclosures Relating to the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support. This table identifies where pre- and post-award current and pending support disclosure information must be provided. Proposers and awardees may begin using this table immediately;
  • Increasing the page limit for the biographical sketch from two to three pages;
  • Updates to the current and pending support section of NSF proposals to require that information on objectives and overlap with other projects is provided to help NSF and reviewers assess overlap/duplication;
  • Adding planning proposals and Career-Life Balance supplemental funding requests as new proposal types;
  • Updates to travel proposals will require that AORs certify that prior to the proposer’s participation in the meeting for which NSF travel support is being requested, the proposer will assure that the meeting organizer has a written policy or code-of-conduct addressing harassment.
We encourage all faculty who submit to NSF to review the by-chapter summary of changes provided in the Introduction section of the PAPPG. While this version of the PAPPG becomes effective on Oct. 4, 2021, in the interim, the guidelines contained in the current PAPPG (NSF 20-1) continue to apply. https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf22001&org=NSF

GERMINATION: Germination of Research Questions for Addressing Critical Societal Challenges
Deadline: Oct. 29, 2021

The NSF Directorate for Engineering GERMINATION program aims to foster the development of pedagogical frameworks, platforms and/or environments to enable participants to formulate research questions and ideas with potentially transformative outcomes. The extraordinary response of the STEM research community to the COVID-19 pandemic, exemplified by the record-breaking speed of novel vaccine development, highlights the outstanding capabilities at all levels of the research enterprise. The GERMINATION program seeks to harness the immense capacities of academic researchers to similarly address other critical global challenges through supporting the development of new pedagogical approaches that train researchers to formulate and develop key research questions. https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=334325

ABOUT US

The Office of Research and Economic & Community Development research units strive to enhance the campus research enterprise, from maintaining an investigator-focused infrastructure and streamlining research processes to facilitating and diversifying investigators' avenues for funding and commercializing research discoveries. Please feel free to stop by (341 and 346 Woods Hall) to find out more about how we can help you succeed. Or visit umsl.edu/research, email ora@umsl.edu or call 314-516-5899. We look forward to hearing from you!
The Research Development, Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA), and Research Compliance units administer grants and contracts for sponsored research and other activities at UMSL. Staff can assist you with many aspects of both internal and external funding, including the following:
  • funding opportunity identification
  • grant writing
  • research compliance
  • pre-award budgeting and submission
  • post-award financials
  • project close-out
To find your pre- or post-award accountant, download the Staff Responsibilities chart.
The Office of IP Management & Commercialization, also known as "Technology Transfer" or the "TTO," assists faculty in protecting and bringing their research discoveries and inventions, whether patentable or copyrightable, to market.
So, why do universities engage in Technology Transfer? Watch this quick video by the Association of University Technology Managers:
Video: About Technology Transfer
Your tech transfer staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.
We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
Please visit our website for more information or to disclose an invention. Feel free to visit us at 346 Woods Hall. Email: wilgerst@umsl.edu
