Dear Vanderbilt Faculty,
As we close out this academic year, I am grateful for the libraries’ capacity to showcase intellectual endeavors in new and unexpected ways. If you are on campus this summer, I invite you to examine the retrocomputing machines marking the advent of the personal computer now on display at the Stevenson Science & Engineering Library. Or explore climate fiction through an immersive audio-visual exhibition in Central Library. Like much of the libraries’ work, these two exhibitions began as faculty conversations. Through collaboration and creativity, the libraries bring ideas to fruition for the campus community to consider and enjoy. Thank you for your unwavering support of student curiosity, and for your partnerships in the libraries' efforts. May you have a safe, healthy and productive research summer.

Summer Offerings at the Digital Commons
The Digital Commons will host its first working group of the summer today, May 18, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on Zoom. These learning communities give faculty a monthly opportunity to meet, share new research and collaborate on projects. The first topic of discussion will focus on virtual and augmented reality. Addressing Deepfakes at the Source
How can we establish the truth when the images and videos around us may be lying? Associate University Librarian for Research and Digital Strategy Cliff Anderson discussed how we can begin to address the problems of deepfakes at the 2022 TEDxVanderbiltUniversity talk. Deepfakes are synthetic media that realistically portray people in situations that never actually took place. By falsifying the historical record, deepfakes pose a threat to the evidentiary value of media. Watch the recording of Anderson's talk on YouTube.

Self-paced Learning with DiSC Summer is a great time for learning new digital tools. The Office of Digital Scholarship and Communications (DiSC) provides digital resources and tutorials on their Github page to support faculty and students in learning and using digital tools to discover, organize, share and publish their research and data. Self-paced learning offerings include bootcamps for GitHub, Python, R, AWS and Linked Open Data. See the DiSC workshop page for a list of full offerings.

New Subscription for Text Analysis
The libraries recently subscribed to Constellate, a text analytics platform for teaching, learning and performing text analysis on repositories of scholarly and primary source content. Constellate includes data and teaching materials licensed under the Creative Commons CC-BY license and available for use, reuse, modification and sharing. Free professional development opportunities are available to faculty to learn more about Python, text analysis and other analysis methods. Contact your library liaison with additional questions about how to access this tool or incorporate it into your instruction.

Better Systematic Review Management
Covidence is a web-based tool that will help you with title/abstract screening, full-text screening, data abstraction and quality assessment. It is geared towards those conducting a systematic review, meta-analysis or clinical guideline, and is great for collaborative work. Lawson Papers to Open for Research
The recently processed James M. Lawson, Jr. Papers will open August 1 for research and teaching. The collection spans nine decades, and includes photographs, sermons and materials covering his work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the organization and training of nonviolent action of the Nashville Sit-Ins in 1960, and correspondence from the time he spent in federal prison for his conscientious objection to the Korean War.

Webinar Available on New Acquisitions in Distinctive Collections
This past March, Special Collections and University Archives hosted a webinar spotlighting recently acquired items in five of Vanderbilt’s distinctive collections.
The presentation featured manuscripts in the Lamar Alexander Papers, manuscripts, artwork and artifacts from the late jazz composer and instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, and a first-hand account of the early years of Title IX at Vanderbilt University in the scrapbook of alumna Margaret (Peggy) Layne, BE’80. Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery acquisitions featured Jeffrey Gibson's A Time for Change and Cass Gilbert's architectural drawings of the Woolworth Building, both recently on display in the Fine Arts Gallery. Student Exhibit on Climate Fiction
The current Buchanan Library Fellows exhibit, Home- Sapiens: Finding Belonging in Climate Fiction, invites visitors to learn how climate fiction helps us to imagine and navigate the changes we face across natural, social, political, psychological and cultural landscapes due to climate change. This immersive exhibit includes multimedia curation, “atmospheric” audio components and an opportunity for visitors to add to the exhibit with a small, creative contribution. The exhibit is on display in the Central Library 2nd floor gallery through December 2022, and has an online component.

Skills Development Resources
Looking to develop new skillsets this summer? Are students asking for advice on preparing for internships? The library has two databases to recommend.
O’Reilly for Higher Education is a multimedia collection of instruction materials focused on computer programming, technology, and business transformation. Thousands of e-books, audiobooks, videos, and case studies will help you engage on topics like programming languages, project management, excel, graphic design, and leadership coaching. O’Reilly recognizes different learning styles, providing users with many ways to learn the same skills, including a mobile application to download content to read or view offline.
The library also subscribes to the Harvard Business Review Press Collection, an e-book package with access to more than 600 e-books on a wide range of topics, including using data to persuade, developing successful teams and partnerships, and managing communication.

Amanda Hellman Named Fine Arts Gallery Director
Please join the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries in welcoming Amanda Hellman as the director of the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery. Hellman joins Vanderbilt from Emory University, where she served as the curator of African art at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. She began her new role May 2.
