One of the great joys of my work this year has been collaborating with the Learning and Teaching Commons Student Partner, Jess Yusko. I don't get a lot of direct interaction with students in my role, so I value any opportunity to hear their insights on learning at Evergreen. I've learned a great deal from working with Jess, and I wish her all the best as she concludes this part of her Evergreen education, but it's hard to imagine the day to day of our office without her.
Jess is leaving us all with a gift: the Evergreen Faculty Supporting Inclusion zine. Each page is a treasure, featuring insights from our own Evergreen faculty and Jess' research into the practices that best support diverse students in the classroom -- all surrounded by meticulously selected artwork, created by Jess and other Evergreen students, to create an engaging and fun resource for all faculty. We get to celebrate that gift at the Zine Launch Party following the Leadership Update on May 4, and we hope you will join us for this event. Following the event, a pdf and plain text version of the zine will be made available for all faculty. (Don't miss Jess's article reflecting on her work on the zine!)
This is also the time of year that we celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of our faculty in Faculty Notes. We hope you'll take some time to reflect on what has brought you joy in your work this year and then share it with us in a Faculty Note to be featured in our June newsletter.

Join us to celebrate the culminating project of Jess Yusko's Student Partner in Learning and Teaching Internship at the Commons!
The Evergreen Faculty Supporting Inclusion zine was made possible by a POD Network DEI mini-grant and the Evergreen Equity and Belonging Fund. It features quotes from current Evergreen faculty across disciplines about how they create inclusive learning experiences in their classrooms with an emphasis on supporting neurodivergent students.
Grab your copy of the zine (while supplies last), enjoy some refreshments, and create your own zine page to give us a head start on future issues!

Who Benefits? Exploring AI and Agency at the 3rd Annual Learning and Teaching Colloquium |
As generative AI rapidly reshapes our teaching landscape, we're asking critical questions: Whose interests are served when these tools enter our classrooms, and how do we claim our agency as a community?
Join us on Friday, September 11 for the Third Annual Learning and Teaching Colloquium, featuring Elisha Lim, Assistant Professor of the Technological Humanities at York University. In their keynote, "Why AI is 400 Years Old," Elisha argues that AI is not an unprecedented crisis, but a predictable outcome of statistical modeling engineered by 17th-century technofeudal corporations like the British East India Company. This talk will zoom out to hundreds of years of corporate governance and resistance.
The afternoon is yours to shape: faculty-driven dialogue, emergent topics, and space to explore the questions that matter most to your teaching practice.

Reflections and an Invitation |

To continue the theme of mindfulness as an approach to teaching and learning, I would like to talk to you about the pace of life and the necessity, at times, of slowing down. This discussion is framed within the context of a project I have worked on this academic year, a zine entitled “Evergreen Faculty Supporting Inclusion.” As the team first discussed ideas for this project, we had hoped to publish three zines, one per quarter, covering different subtopics found within our publication “Framework for Inclusive and Culturally Sustaining Teaching at Evergreen.” It’s kind of a mouthful, isn’t it? Precisely due to this reason, we hoped to unpack certain key themes in the framework and reintroduce them in a new context, relating the concepts to practical tips and advice from faculty, as well as making the new zine format fun and visually engaging.
I began this project almost a year ago, and it is exciting to see the stages it has gone through and the ways we have had to adapt and adjust our expectations, especially relating to this idea of slowing down.
