On February 4, NYU Shanghai Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen was awarded a Friendship Award by the Chinese government at a ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Waley-Cohen is the second foreigner at NYU Shanghai to receive this prestigious honor, following Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman.

• Congratulations to Scofield Zou '24, who has been announced as a finalist for the McCall MacBain Scholarship, and to Tate Pan '24, who earned a C$10,000 McCall MacBain Regional Award.

• Congratulations to Stephanie Anderson '23, Ana Aravena-Crellin '24, Jaime Cantwell '21, and Ruby Rich '24, who have been announced as semi-finalists for the 2024-2025 Fulbright competition.

• Assistant Arts Professor of Visual Arts Maya Kramer spoke at the Vietnam Art Collection Foundation's first-anniversary gathering in Hanoi two weeks ago. Her talk explored how certain large-scale thematic surveys on Chinese Contemporary Art, particularly in Europe and North America, cater to pre-existing Euro and American-centric notions of 'avant-garde' art and downplay the importance of the ink tradition and Socialist Realism history in the development of Chinese Modern and Contemporary art.

• Last Friday, Senior Language Lecturer of Chinese Jing Chai brought 21 international students from her Elementary Chinese II and Advanced Chinese I classes to visit Dongming Community. The students experienced an immersive introduction to Chinese New Year, sampling foods from eight different vendors, including roasted sweet potatoes, white cut chicken, and Chinese baked goods. They also interacted with three Chinese families, discussing Chinese New Year-related topics. Another six teachers from the Chinese language program also participated in the event, with the hopes of more opportunities for cooperation with Dongming Community in the future.

• On Monday, the Australian Consulate-General in Shanghai, led by Ms. Kim Pang from the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations, Consul Jordan Aitken, and Ms. Sophie He, visited NYU Shanghai. Their tour included the Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE), focusing on a digital mental health tool for Chinese students in Australia. CGHE Director Professor Brian Hall highlighted the visit's alignment with the center's focus on scalable digital mental health interventions. Discussions led by Assistant Professor of Global Public Health Jin Han on binational mental health projects underscored the initiative's significance, showcasing NYU Shanghai's role in fostering global health innovation.

Submissions are now open for the 4th Annual NYU Sports Film Festival! Our continuing categories for NYU students and alumni include NYU Documentary and NYU Narrative. This year we are excited to introduce a Pitch Contest category, inviting NYU entrants to submit sports media project pitches for presentation to a panel of industry professionals. We are also proud to announce a partnership with Red Bull, launching our first Action Sports category to highlight adventurous and diverse forms of sports storytelling! Last Friday, NYU Shanghai welcomed back its Dumpling Festival. The lively occasion showcased China's cultural heritage as well as the global appeal of dumplings, including mantu from Afghanistan, Polish pierogi, and more.
