Celebrating Level 5 Students |
|
|
As the semester is coming to an end, we wanted to celebrate our Level 5 students! We asked our students about their time here and their next steps. We wanted to include a few of their answers to celebrate them!
In a word, please describe your experience at the Tutorium.
Our students described their unique experience at Tutorium, ranging from unforgettable, fantastic, good, valuable, fun, to peculiarly different.
What has been the biggest positive influence on you during your time at the Tutorium?
Our students said their teachers, classmates, and Chicago’s diversity have made the biggest positive impact on them.
How are you going to celebrate finishing Level 5?
Hanging out with friends, catching up on well-deserved sleep, and going home are our students' plans for finishing this semester.
What is your next journey?
While most of our students' next journeys involve continuing or starting higher education, some of our students use their English skills to get a job.
What advice would you like to give to other IEP students?
Our students said…
|
- Participating and attending class is your best bet for doing well in class.
- Talking in English even outside of class is the best way to improve.
- Take advantage of every opportunity.
- But most importantly, enjoy your journey as much as you can! The more you enjoy your journey, the smoother it will be!
|
Congrats on all the hard work you have done this semester! Best of luck on the next steps in your journey!

Historical Adventures at the Chicago History Museum |

Hi everyone, 👋🏼 A few days ago, some university classmates and I visited the Chicago History Museum! 🏛️ And let me tell you, although it's not the biggest museum in the city, it's full of surprises!
What did we find? 🤔 Well, a lot of super interesting things about the history of Chicago! Here are just a few:
The Great Fire: Imagine! An exhibition that transports you to one of the most dramatic moments in the city. 🔥
The Al Capone Era: Yes, guys! The dark side of Chicago in the 1920s. 🕶️ A fascinating (and a bit chilling) era!
Fashion Through Time! 👗👔 A room full of dresses and suits that show you how style has changed in Chicago! It's like a journey through time through clothing!
A documentary about Jane Addams: To end our visit, we relaxed in the museum's cinema and watched a documentary about Jane Addams. 🎬 (A social pioneer who did so much for Chicago. A true inspiration!)
The truth is, it's a museum that sometimes goes unnoticed, but it's totally worth visiting! 👍 If you want to learn more about the city where you study, this is the place!
Where is it? 📍 1601 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614.
Don't miss it! 😉

Are you studying with us in the fall? Did you know that TIE students may audit courses with no fee, as long as they receive approval from the college offering the course and collect the required signatures on the audit form. The time frame for getting permission and signing up is short and is at the beginning of each semester. So you should make your plans now and be ready to work on the paperwork as soon as class starts in the fall.
You can find the form, along with more info on auditing, here: https://registrar.uic.edu/registration/audit/. You would register as a non-degree undergraduate student. Paperwork must be completed before the last day of late registration and cannot be done before the first day of instruction.

Do you like theater? Check out UIC's production of "Summertime, An Interlude." This play is written by a UIC alum and screenwriter Aniello Fontano (BA ’14) and showcases his love for the city and the neighborhood where he grew up—our UIC neighborhood. This is the first play written by an alum, set in a fictional neighborhood inspired by University Village. To learn more about the play and purchase tickets, read more>>.
The play runs from April 19th till the 26th. So go grab a friend and go check out "Summertime, An Interlude."

How can you continue learning and improving your English skills even after studying at the Tutorium? The secret is taking risks and remembering that life, even language learning, is one big adventure. Here are a few tips to take with you on your language learning journey.
|
|
|
- Leave your comfort zone: You are in a different country, one of the biggest cities in the USA! This is your chance to spend time exploring and being independent! You will also grow as a person and be stronger and smarter!
- Go to cheap or FREE events right on campus. Click here to check UIC’s event calendar.
- Invite a classmate or a neighbor for coffee or lunch. Think of people as potential friends, possibly for life.
- Take a world food tour: Chicago has a plethora of eating options from all over the world!

|
Next time you think or say, “I have never done that before!” consider it an opportunity to do something new, not as a reason not to do it.

| Choosing the best career and major for you |
|
|
When people choose the focus of their education, the goal is to set a strong foundation for their lives. We usually choose our fields for two reasons: to find a job (occupation) with decent pay and to work at something we are interested in. Unfortunately, we often choose without knowing all of the possible choices! We usually only know the kinds of jobs that our parents, relatives, and friends have.
To increase your knowledge of types of jobs, you can just look at this website for occupations in the USA. Home: Occupational Outlook Handbook
Occupations = jobs or types of jobs. Outlook = predictions about those jobs.
Look at how you can search, sort, and look at jobs!

Course & Student Services Evaluations
Every semester, the Tutorium researches to improve our program. We get information from teachers and students. To collect this information from students, we use online surveys near the end of the semester.
Next week, you will complete a Tutorium Course evaluation and a Student Services evaluation. Your teacher will tell you when. These evaluations are online, and you can complete them on your computer or your phone.
These evaluations will ask you about your learning experience. Because these evaluations are online, you can change your answers only before you click the "Done" button. You can also write comments, and we encourage you to do so.
After the semester ends and we have sent you your grades, our director and your teachers will look at the evaluations, and the Curriculum Committee will also study the information for the whole program.
Thank you for helping us improve our program and participating in this evaluation system.
Do you have the Blackboard app on your phone?https://help.blackboard.com/Blackboard_App

Go to our Course Catalog for details and email tutorium@uic.edu for more information or to sign up for a test preparation course. Note: IEP students must be enrolled in Level 3 or above to enroll.
