ABOUT LANE-FALL
Dr. Lane-Fall received her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in anesthesiology, as well as a fellowship in critical care medicine (anesthesiology), at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Thereafter she was a postdoctoral research fellow in anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She is a board-certified anesthesiologist and surgical intensivist and former post-doctoral fellow of the Penn Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety. In 2013 she received a Master of Science in Health Policy Research (MSHP) degree from University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Lane-Fall’s current research focuses on improving clinical outcomes for patients experiencing life-threatening illness in the context of surgical care. Within this broad area, she is particularly interested in improving healthcare provider communication at times of transition or handoff across sites of care. She employs implementation and dissemination research strategies to develop evidence about effective communication strategies that incorporate human factors principles and that support clinician workflow. She has expertise in the use of qualitative and mixed methods in study design. She also serves as a research mentor to medical students, residents, and fellows interested in health services research. Since 2014 she has been a National Institutes of Health Early Career Reviewer, and in 2015 she was elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists.

After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe three types of handoffs in perioperative care.
• Evaluate evidence linking perioperative handoffs to patient safety.
• Describe elements common to handoff standardization strategies for      operating room to intensive care unit handoffs.
