Ed Martin

Message from the Associate Vice-President and Director of Extension

Over the weekend, we celebrated the Dean’s Almost World Famous Burrito Breakfast as part of the University’s Homecoming activities. I had the honor to be one of the servers on the food line. As usual, I saw some old friends and made some new ones. It was great to see so much support from throughout Extension, the College, and the Division. Faculty, staff, and alums shared stories, bidding on items to help our students, and enjoyed some great presentations and videos.

All in all, a great success. Congratulations to Jim Davis and the CALES Development Team on another successful event.

La Paz County Water Factsheet is now available

As the ninth installment in the WRRC’s Arizona Water Factsheet series, this concise resource provides a general overview of the county’s water supply and demand, sustainable water management strategies, and future challenges associated with preserving the county’s rural lifestyle and quality of life. The important economic contributions of the Colorado River Indian Tribes are also discussed, along with their ongoing environmental stewardship and water conservation commitments.

This factsheet highlights how local water topics connect to broader state conversations including the expansion of foreign-owned commercial farming operations and how the recent federal authorization given to the CRIT may help to mitigate future imbalances between water supply and demand amid continued reductions to Arizona’s supply of Colorado River water. The La Paz County Technical Advisory Committee helped provide local insight to contextualize existing water-related data. For La Paz County, the TAC included representation from the Town of Parker and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Additional stakeholders provided input reflective of their deep local knowledge about the county’s water resources and management.

Artificial Insemination Clinic - Camp Verde

Artifical insemination has been shown to improve the genetic quality of a herd, increase consistency and value to a calf crop, eliminate the need to purchase, house, and feed a full bull battery, shorten breeding and calving season, and generally improve the profitability of a livestock production operation.

If you are interested in adding an AI program into your livestock operation, please join us for our 2.5-day AI Clinic at our UA Experimental Ranch, V Bar V, near Camp Verde November 17-19, 2023. Our experienced staff will guide you through the entire AI process and will include hands-on practice including live animals. Cost is $800, first-come basis, non-refundable, and includes a take-home AI kit ($350 value), AI manual, flash drive with all the presentations, and lunch on Sat. and BBQ on Sunday. Registration is limited to 12 participants.

Please contact Sierra Sheeks at the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension Office, (928) 445-6590. For further questions, please contact Andrew Brischke (928) 753-3788 or brischke@cals.arizona.edu
