Teaching with Final Rounds

Our final rounds are one of our most popular resources with students. Refresh your instruction with new videos—or plan a practice in which students watch a final round and take notes on what competitors do well. Then, have them apply those strategies to their own performances.
Sample Activity » In this activity from NSDA coach Leeann Solice, students watch final round performances, adjudicate, and provide feedback or analysis for each performer. You can make a copy of this activity for a single performance or with ranks and feedback for a round of up to eight competitors.

Skip Your Prep: Duo Lesson Plan

In this lesson from Colorado College, students practice creating authentic conversation off-script and in-character. The duo pre-determines places their characters might meet, then converses, behaves, and responds in character. After a few minutes, the coach says ‘confession’ and, in character, one of them reveals something of great importance which has the potential to change their relationship.

Celebrate Excellence in Middle School Speech and Debate

Middle school speech and debate builds confidence and a sense of belonging at a critical age. We're looking to celebrate the coaches who make it possible through their leadership, advocacy, and encouragement. Sound like someone you know? Nominate them for the following middle school national awards!

Nominate Coaches for the 2022 Hall of Fame Class

The highest honor for any high school speech and debate coach is election to the NSDA Hall of Fame. As a member coach, you can submit a Hall of Fame nomination by February 1 for consideration. In April, current Hall of Fame members and coaches with at least three diamonds vote to determine which nominees will be inducted.

Celebrate NSDE Day

Make a plan or designate a captain to organize your team's celebration for National Speech and Debate Education Day on March 4. Sign up for a free toolkit with everything you need!

Encourage Student Submissions for National Congress Legislation

New this year, any NSDA member student may submit legislation by February 15 to be considered for the 2022 National Tournament docket (multiple submissions welcome). We are seeking more submissions, more diverse topics, and more student input to align with our strategic goal of championing student agency and voice. Please spread the word to your students!
