The School of Pharmacy is excited to welcome Dr. Kayla Stover Hielscher (left) and Dr. Kristen Pate into new leadership roles.
Hielscher is now serving as the school's new assistant dean on the Jackson campus as well as vice chair of pharmacy practice. "I am honored to be in this role and have the opportunity to work with students in a different capacity, help map new directions for the Department of Pharmacy Practice, forge and enhance relationships with UMMC, and continue to contribute to the overall mission of the School of Pharmacy," Hielscher said. Pate has been named associate dean for student affairs. "In my new role, I am excited about the opportunity to foster a supportive and enriching environment that empowers students to excel academically, personally and professionally," Pate said. |

Cameron Buss, a third-year student in the School of Pharmacy from Dyersburg, Tennessee, has been awarded a Community Pharmacy Scholarship from Pharmacists Mutual.
Buss was one of 20 students across the country who received $3,000 scholarships, which are awarded to those pursuing careers in small-chain or independent pharmacies or for serving underserved populations. He plans to practice in Dyersburg, hopefully alongside his father, Tom, at the independent local pharmacy where he serves the community. |

A new gift to the School of Pharmacy will bring expert speakers to the Oxford campus, broadening the education students receive while paying tribute to a beloved professor.
Alumnus Michael Borne and his wife Ashley made the $250,000 gift in honor of his father, establishing the Ronald F. Borne Distinguished Lectureship. The inaugural lecture will take place on Friday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. in room 1000 of the Thad Cochran Research Center. Christopher McCurdy, professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, will present the first lecture. |

Donors Help Outfit Incoming Professional Students |
The School of Pharmacy would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who chose to sponsor a white coat and help outfit students with their coats and, for the first time, their stethoscopes. The school is grateful to those donors who, as a whole, contributed more than $5,000 to help prepare students for the journey ahead and celebrate their exciting milestone.
The School of Pharmacy is thrilled to welcome students back to campus and looking forward to a productive year! |

Nearly 90% of sports supplements are inaccurately labeled, according to a new study by scientists at the School of Pharmacy's National Center for Natural Products Research. NCNPR researchers Ikhlas Khan, Bharathi Avula and Kumar Katragunta collaborated with scientists from Harvard Medical School, the Cambridge Health Alliance and NSF International on the study, recently published in JAMA Network Open.
"Our team at the NCNPR has so much experience working with these products that I can't say we were surprised by this," said Khan, the center's director. "Consumers need to be aware that there are many safety issues with sports supplements." |

Many Mississippi pharmacies do not have the lifesaving drug naloxone available, according to a recent paper by School of Pharmacy researchers.
Naloxone is a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose by restoring normal breathing and preventing possible fatal consequences. In 2017, the Mississippi State Department of Health's head physician signed a standing order permitting pharmacists to dispense the drug with or without a prescription.
"This is really important work," said Meagen Rosenthal, interim director of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing and associate professor of pharmacy administration. "We often think that just because legislation passes or the formulation changes, then we are solving all the problems. "We need to understand our pharmacies and our communities and their needs. At the end of the day, we have to get these patients access so that they don't die unnecessarily."
