RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT

Forest fires accelerating snowmelt across Western U.S.
In the winter season after a forest fire, soot and burned debris fall from trees and settle on the snow’s surface, which causes it to absorb more energy from the sun than usual.
A team of researchers from DRI, Portland State, and the University of Nevada, Reno recently published findings showing that there’s been a four-fold increase in the amount of energy absorbed by snowpack across the West over the last 20 years due to forest fires.

The result? Earlier snowmelt, for as many as 15 years after a fire, which can profoundly impact the communities across the West that rely on mountain snowpack for water supplies.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

DRI Community Survey
At DRI, we're committed to helping you get to know the incredible scientists, engineers, and staff behind the science (see above!). As part of our 60th anniversary, we're also interested in learning more about our community members and what they know about DRI.
Please consider taking this brief survey to help us get to know you.
Everyone who takes the survey by June 30th will be entered in a giveaway for a DRI prize pack!

IMAGES OF THE MONTH

Teresa Wriston shows artifacts in the Archaeology Lab in Reno.
In celebration of DRI's 60th anniversary, we hosted open houses on both our Reno and Las Vegas campuses last month.
Community members came to campus for lab tours, hands-on activities, Star Wars characters, food trucks, and more. We're already looking forward to the next time all of you will get to visit us!
