Where Are We Driving?

Prof. of History Douglas Sackman published an article in the journal Perspectives on History asking whether the history of the automobile might provide a roadmap for a future shaped by generative AI. 

"Our history with the automobile, including leaded gasoline, tells us that we have in the past cruised by the wreckage caused by new technologies while reveling in our newfound speed," Sackman writes. "In our ongoing experience with generative AI and all that it promises for education, the costs may lie in the debilitation of our students’ capacities for critical thought and expression, and a general toxification of our learning environments."

He notes that his students gain a lot from the practice of doing their own research and writing their own papers — a process that forces students to problem-solve, be creative, and become insightful scholars in their own right.

Support for Students

Vice President for Enrollment Tim Whittum was interviewed by The Olympian about the changes to federal financial aid policy and the effects on students and families for the 2026–27 academic year. This year brings new borrowing limits and eligibility requirements for federal student loans. Whittum emphasized that resources exist on campus to make informed decisions about financial aid beyond completing the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

"Students still need assistance interpreting aid offers, understanding affordability, comparing institutions, completing verification or identity requirements when applicable, and navigating the enrollment process," Whittum said. "Application completion should be viewed on a continuum rather than an end in itself."
