Tracking FAFSA Completion
Tracking FAFSA Completion
You have several options for tracking your seniors’ FAFSA graduation requirement. Please note: all documentation should remain on file at the school.
- Collect FAFSA Submission Summaries
Ask students to provide their 2026–27 FAFSA Submission Summaries and file these as proof of completion. -
Monitor Progress in the Oklahoma FAFSA Data Portal.
Use the portal to verify each student’s FAFSA completion status and identify signature errors that need correction.
- Maintain Opt-Out Documentation
Keep copies of Opt-Out forms for students who choose not to complete the FAFSA.

The FAFSA Submission Summary is the document students will receive after successfully submitting their FAFSA. It serves as a confirmation and summary of the information provided. The FAFSA Submission Summary can be found in the student’s StudentAid.gov account. This summary will note if the student needs to make any corrections to finalize their FAFSA.
If no corrections are needed, the summary will list some types of federal financial aid that the student may be eligible to receive. Advise students to log into their StudentAid.gov account several days after submission to review eligibility and follow up on any necessary changes.
The Student Aid Index (SAI) is a number used in U.S. federal student aid programs to determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study. This number ranges on a scale from -1,500 to 999,999.
-
An SAI of 0 or below qualifies a student for the maximum Pell Grant (currently $7,395).
- Students with an SAI above 0 may still receive a reduced Pell Grant.
College financial aid offices also rely on the SAI to award other types of financial aid—including institutional grants, scholarships, and loans—to help make college more affordable.
Parent Contributors on the FAFSA
One of the more common questions on the FAFSA is: “Which parent should include their information on the student’s FAFSA?’ Try using the StudentAid.gov FAFSA Parent Wizard for guidance. The Parent Wizard is an interactive tool designed to help students figure out which parent’s information should be included on the FAFSA. This is especially useful in situations where:
- Parents are divorced or separated
- A student lives with one parent more than the other
- There are stepparents involved
OCAP also offers publications that can assist you through this process.

What’s Your Dependency Status? This resource asks students a series of questions — similar to those under Personal Circumstances on the FAFSA — to determine whether the student is considered independent or dependent. Independent students complete the FAFSA using only their financial information, while dependent students must invite a parent contributor.

Who Needs a StudentAid.Gov Account? This guide uses a flowchart to help families determine which parent(s) should provide information on the FAFSA. Based on the answers, it shows who needs an account (one parent or both parents) so they can sign and submit the FAFSA electronically.

Free Presentations and Workshops |
The UCanGo2 Outreach Team is available to provide free presentations or Zoom webinars at your school, library or community center focused on college planning and the FAFSA! Additionally, we can share information about Oklahoma’s Promise, finding scholarships and creating a StudentAid.gov account, which is necessary to access and electronically sign your FAFSA application.
