AI Summer Training Program
Dr. Adam Natoli (Department of Psychology & Philosphy), and Dr. ABM Islam (Department of Computer Science) were awarded a William K. and Katherine W. Estes Fund grant from the Association for Psychological Science and Psychonomic Society for their proposal, Applications of Machine Learning for Measuring and Modeling Psychological Concepts via Different Methods of Communication.
The funded project is to host a 3-day intensive summer training program at SHSU dedicated to introducing student, early career, and established researchers to fundamental concepts related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and other relevant methods and provide instruction and practice applying these techniques to measure and model psychological concepts. Combined with support from SHSU’s ORSP and Division of Finance & Operations, The Estes grant will allow them to provide 25 attendees, many of whom will be scholars from historically underrepresented groups, free lodging and meals for the duration of the training program as well as a $500 stipend.
"We will use active learning strategies, facilitated by SHSU’s own Engaging Classrooms program, to introduce attendees to the rich intersection of psychology and computer science", says Dr. Natoli. "We also hope this experience will generate new collaborations between attendees, as well as between attendees and the SHSU community, fostered through a networking dinner for attendees, invited SHSU faculty, and local industry professionals."
Given the enthusiasm this faculty team has already seen from prospective attendees, they hope to transition this training program into an annual event wherein we host a group of scholars to attend training focused on the intersection of psychology and computer science. Optimistically, they look to integrate other disciplines into the mix in future years.
