• We celebrated Women’s Day with a Chinese cultural twist. The Office of Human Resources hosted a week of wellness and heritage activities for female employees including talks on TCM and Kunqu Opera, a crystal-crafting workshop, singing bowl experience, and a Breath & Motion dance session. Over 100 participants recharged and connected with cultural traditions.
• The “father of contemporary a cappella” visited NYU Shanghai this week. On Wednesday
Deke Sharon, arranger, music director, and producer of the film
Pitch Perfect, was invited to campus by Clinical Assistant Professor of Arts
Katherine Gervin, and led NYU Shanghai and ECNU a cappella students in a rehearsal for a concert at ECNU.
• Congratulations to NYU Associate Professor and founder of the Asian Film and Media Initiative
Zhang Zhen (teaching at NYU Shanghai this semester), who, along with three former NYU advisees, edited The
Routledge Companion to Asian Cinemas, which
won the 1st Aruna Vasudev Award for best book on Asian cinema.
• National Book Award nominated poet Jenny Xie gave a reading in the World Languages Lounge on Thursday. Born in Anhui, China, but spending most of her life in the US, Xie's poetry is a complex, fascinating blend of cultural and linguistic elements. She spoke about her life story and experiences as a writer.
