Teaching Argumentation with Commercials
Analyzing commercials is an engaging way to demonstrate the parts of an argument. Students can practice identifying the elements, judging their effectiveness, and noting when some are absent.
In lesson 6 of our Start Here: Teaching Public Forum Debate unit, high school students watch a series of commercials, including this Chipotle commercial, and evaluate the claims, data, warrants, and impacts in the ad. Try out this strategy using our materials or choose commercials of your own to give it a go! In a mixed classroom setting, advanced students could be tasked with finding commercials, identifying the parts, and going through the material with novices.
