A Special Message from BYM Camps re: Flash Flooding |
|
|
Dear BYM Camper Families -
Like many of you, we watched in horror and heartbreak over the weekend at the news of flash flooding in Texas - including the deaths of more than two dozen girls and their counselors at Camp Mystic summer camp in Hunt, Texas. Our hearts go out to every family affected by this tragedy, and we wanted to reach out and update each of you on the flooding protocols at BYM Camps. Though our camps are outside this storm's projected path, we will continue to keep a close eye on post-tropical storm Chantal and prepare for the potential of future storms throughout the summer season.
|
- None of the camper cabins and platform tents at BYM Camps are located within floodplains - even in the event of "100 year" flooding.
-
All four BYM Camps - Catoctin, Shiloh, Opequon, and Teen Adventure - have flash flood protocols at camp and on the trail. These protocols were updated in the Spring of 2025 as part of our annual review of emergency protocols.
-
Anytime inclement weather is in the area of camp or backpacking trips - lightning, flooding, wildfire and decreased air quality, or extreme heat - our Camp Directors are in close contact with our Camping Program Manager, Zora Tucker, or General Secretary, Sarah Gillooly, to continuously assess risk, communicate with counselors and trip leaders, and adjust as needed to keep your camper safe.
-
Each year during the off-season, we gather to discuss how the changing climate is impacting our camps and camper safety and to consider new and evolving best practices in emergency management for children's summer camps.
|
In this era of ecological change and instability, we believe it is more important than ever to help young people connect to the earth with joy, with reverence, and with community care. Thank you for entrusting your young person to BYM Camps this summer. We will continue to take the threat of inclement weather and climate instability seriously and to do everything in our power to keep your camper safe.
With Care,
|
