Data alone can’t solve our problems.
In fact, data often creates more problems than they solve. The way we quantify and qualify impact defines our values and what we mean by “good data.” In this talk, Professor Sam Scarpino of Northeastern University will describe how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted longstanding issues around equity, privacy, and sovereignty, which can’t be solved by technology alone.

| Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Hackathon: Calculating the ROI of AI Ethics for Organizations

Hosted by the Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, hackathon participants will code and iterate on ideas for calculating the return on investment of AI ethics while networking with professionals from IBM, LogicaNow, TechBetter, and Notre Dame.
Winners will be selected by a panel of expert judges who will evaluate the code’s accuracy and alignment with the research paper titled "The Return on Investment in AI Ethics: A Holistic Framework", as well as the practicality and quality of the ideas generated by participants.

The Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) network invites you to submit abstracts for a three-day symposium that aims to bridge the widening gaps between academia and the public when it comes to the understanding of science.
The event will bring together various stakeholders to explore innovative strategies for effective science communication and public engagement, emphasizing what it will take to build trust with audiences in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The deadline to submit an abstract is TODAY Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

| Volunteers Needed: Blue-Gold Data & Society Outreach Event

ND Athletics and the Lucy Civic Innovation Lab (LCIL) are partnering to offer a STEM / Data & Society outreach event for approximately 200 students in grades 3-5 from schools on the West Side of South Bend on the morning of the Blue/Gold game, Saturday April 20.
We're looking for volunteers to help with the event, primarily working with small groups of students to help them with the activities.

| Student workshop opportunity: “Deliberative Technologies and Computational Democracy in Polarized Contexts”
|
Deliberative technologies enable people to listen at scale to each other, add their policy ideas, incentivize finding common ground across polarized publics, and enable synthesizing and ranking on ideas with wide consensus.
Students are invited to participate in a 4-day workshop from June 24-28 on the Notre Dame campus that will include 25 peacebuilding experts from around the world who will be exploring how to use these technologies in places like Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Kenya, and in the US.
Spots are limited to the first 10 accepted applications.

The series features broad perspectives for general audiences on the present and future impact of AI on society, and seminars are intended to inspire a dialogue on ethical and socially responsible Data & AI innovation.
This nomination form is open to ND faculty, staff, and graduate students. Submissions are due by April 17, 2024.
