RISING ISSUES
At Earthrise, we are passionate about using the law to protect and
restore the environment and the planet's natural resources, and about
training law students to become skilled environmental advocates.

Earthrise student argues before the Ninth Circuit

Drew Baloga, who took the Earthrise clinic last year and then worked with us as a summer clerk, argued in front of the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco last week. Drew presented oral argument on behalf of our clients Earth Island Institute and the Center for Biological Diversity in support of their challenge to the Three Creeks logging Project in the Inyo National Forest.

Earthrise Legal Fellow’s first "live" court appearance

Our Senior Legal Fellow, Haley Nicholson, made her first live court appearance in federal district court in Maine to argue for more transparency in government decision-making. She presented oral argument for a case in which Earthrise represents several public interest environmental organizations opposing an electrical transmission line cutting across fragile and ecologically important habitat in western Maine.

Welcome to Lydia, our newest Legal Fellow!

Lydia graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School last spring and is excited to develop her lawyering skills by learning from the entire Earthrise team for the next two years. Lydia was an Earthrise summer clerk between her 2L and 3L years, and then she was a part of the clinic class during her 3L year. We are so excited to be working with her as she starts her legal career.
Clean Water Act lawsuit paves the way for Medford treatment plant improvements
In August of 2023, the City Council for the City of Medford voted to approve up to $300 million to upgrade the city’s Regional Water Reclamation Facility, a municipal wastewater treatment plant that today serves a population of 160,000 and discharges 18 million gallons of effluent per day into the Rogue River near Central Point, Oregon. For local river users and for Earthrise’s client, Northwest Environmental Advocates, this was an important milestone in a fight for a cleaner Rogue that dates back over a decade.
Save the Date! December 7th.
Earthrise will host a holiday event on Thursday, December 7th in Portland. We will be sending more details on the time and location in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Lunch Discussion on Environmental Justice with Professor Helen Kang

Thank you to the law school's Distinguished Environmental Visitor, Professor Helen Kang, for taking time out of her busy visit to campus to have lunch with us. Professor Kang joined Earthrise and GLA clinic students for a lunch Q&A session discussing her amazing career as a clinical professor at Golden Gate and practicing lawyer, and her work representing communities that have been disproportionately affected by environmental harms.

Thank you to our summer clerks and welcome to our new clinic class!

Above: Our 2023 Summer Clerks. Left to Right, Zach Nacev, Jamie Johnson, Julia Taylor, Evelyn Mailander, Drew Baloga. Earthrise had another great and productive summer with five full-time clerks who were able to get hands-on experience working on ongoing litigation.
Below: Our 2023-24 clinic class. We have a great group of 21 students and are excited to get to know and work with them over the school year. Students are already hard at work on active matters ranging from public land preservation to water quality cases to climate change work.
