Pat Hale and Joan Rubin
Letter from Joan Rubin, Executive Director, SDM
A huge thank you to the alumni who joined us here at MIT for Pat Hale’s retirement celebration in February. The outpouring of well-wishes was overwhelming, and it was inspirational to see so many alumni gathered together and catching up. For those who were not able to attend the event, Pat would still love to hear from you. We have created an electronic memory book for him and welcome any additional thoughts, comments, and stories.
January was also a busy month as we kicked off the Independent Activities Period (IAP) with a business trip week on campus for all of our first-year master's and certificate students. Under the updated core class structure launched a couple of years ago, all students spend an intensive week on campus to kick off their spring projects. These core projects have proved an excellent way for students to integrate new SDM knowledge and address real-world problems. The projects also help companies see how SDM teachings can impact their organizations. Projects will continue through the term with final presentations in mid-May. If you have ideas for future projects, please let me know. We’d love to increase the diversity and range of options for students.
Finally, SDM is making an effort to foster more formal and informal alumni gatherings. During an MIT-sponsored Innovation Trek to Japan in January, we held a networking event for SDM alumni in Tokyo. This month we will hold a couple events in the San Francisco Bay Area during the spring SDM Tech Trek, and we are actively looking for more event ideas. Please keep an eye out for alumni events in your area. We’d love to see you.
Warm regards,
Joan Rubin

A Celebration of Pat Hale
The SDM community came together on February 11 to celebrate Pat Hale and wish him the best as he stepped down from leadership of the SDM program. Pat led the program for more than 10 years, guiding SDM from a small and scrappy experiment into a foundational leader in interdisciplinary graduate education.
At the celebration, dozens of alumni from all cohorts joined with current students, staff, and faculty from across MIT. Faculty Codirectors Steve Eppinger and Warren Seering and SDM Executive Director Joan Rubin gave brief remarks highlighting Pat’s contributions—both academic and personal. Pat's warmth and generosity was credited with turning SDM into a close-knit group of staff and students who support each other both on campus and after graduation.
We thank all of you who were able to make it to the party in spite of the unpredictable winter weather! If you have photos to share or would like to send well-wishes and remembrances to Pat, please contact us.

January Tech Showcase and Project Forum Recap
From Ireland, Japan, and around the United States, students and industry guests came to the wintry MIT campus for the SDM Tech Showcase and Project Forum on January 9. This daylong event at the MIT Media Lab kicked off our weeklong residency for the first-year SDM core class during the January IAP. Students presented the results of their technology investigation projects from the fall term, and 14 companies—including BMW, General Motors, MITRE, Analog Devices, Veolia, and Lawrence Livermore —pitched ideas for projects. The students had the opportunity to rank their preferences, and SDM matched teams of students with industry challenges. The day finished with a guest lecture from Professor Martin Culpepper, MIT’s “maker czar” and leader of Project Manus, an initiative focused on upgrading and enhancing the Institute’s maker spaces.
If you’d like to learn more about the IAP residency week or hear about opportunities for your company to partner with an SDM team, contact us!
