NIH's New Data Management (DMS) & Sharing Plan Begins January 25, 2023
NIH’s new data management and sharing plan goes into effect January 25, 2023. The new plan aims to promote the sharing of scientific data. Sharing scientific data accelerates biomedical research discovery by enabling the validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data reuse for future research studies.
This includes competing grant applications and proposals for contracts that are submitted to NIH on or after the January 25, 2023, submission deadline. The DMS Policy does not apply to research and other activities that do not generate scientific data, including training, infrastructure development, and non-research activities.
The NIH Data Management & Sharing DMS Policy applies to all research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data.
This includes all NIH-supported research regardless of funding level, including: extramural grants, extramural contracts, intramural research projects, and other funding agreements.
Upon policy implementation, NIH expects the following from investigators and institutions:
  • To plan and budget for the management and sharing of data
  • To submit a DMS plan (via the new ‘Other Plans’ field on PHS 398 Research Plan and Career Development Award forms) for review when applying for funding
  • To comply with the approved DMS plan
