Woodinville High School Theatre Presents: Arsenic and Old Lace
Woodinville High School Theatre Company is excited to present Joseph Kesselring’s classic comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. This hilarious dark farce tells the tale of two sweet, yet murderous, old sisters, their delusional nephew who thinks he’s Theodore Roosevelt, a criminal Boris Karloff look-alike, and a theatre critic in love. Performances are October 26-27 and November 2 & 3, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Woodinville High School Theater. Arsenic and Old Lace delights with quirky characters, chaotic misadventures, and creepy absurdity.

Mortimer Brewster is a New York drama critic who hates the theatre. He has his sights set on marrying the pastor’s daughter, Elaine, but just as Mortimer ventures to share their good news with his seemingly harmless little-old-lady aunts Martha and Abby Brewster, he discovers the sisters’ proclivity for murdering lonely old men as an act of charity. Add to the mix Mortimer’s nutty brother, Teddy, who thinks he’s Theodore Roosevelt, his homicidal maniac brother, Jonathan, and a criminal plastic surgeon accomplic, Dr. Einstein — and the result is a mix of laugh-out-loud hilarity and macabre mayhem.

The cast is comprised of 22 of Woodinville High School’s Advanced Acting students, including seniors Vivian Balasu, Brendan Benton, Hans Blomberg, Trevor Harrison, Ethan Hatch, Andrew Kinsfather, Aaron Leatherman, Grace Lewis, Gerry Noy, Luke Preston, Matilyn Ransom, Nikki Smith, Nolan Spencer, Preston Ventrella and Ben Winarske, and juniors Emerson Cobbley, Korentin Delisle, Chris Dembo, Garrett Fischer, Wesley Hesselgrave, Taelor Landau, Nicole McMillan and Gennifer Noy.

The set features the Victorian era residence of the Brewster sisters, perfect for a spooky, murderous romp. Crews of students from the WHS Technical Theatre program handle the technical aspects of the show, from set building and lighting to publicity. Senior technical theatre students include: Tristian Scott (Stage Manager), Asher Faamoe (Technical and Sound Director as well as Master Carpenter), Grace Lewis (Costumes), Deirdre Gertz and Nolan Spencer (Props), Vivian Balasu, Alexia Straw and Preston Ventrella (Hair and Makeup), and Hailey Smith and Max Stember (House Manager).

The show is directed and designed by Josh Butchart, with the support of Asher Faamoe, Katharina Bomers-Muller and Stephanie Penoyer (Assistant Directors), Marsha Stueckle (Costumes), Katharina Bomers-Muller (Producer) and the Woodinville Drama Boosters, led by Kit Topaz.
Join us for the WHS Voices Fall Concert Thursday, November 1, 7 p.m. in the WHS Theater for performances by Concert Voices, Bel Canto, Varsity Voices, & Bro Canto! Featured Soloists: Gerry Noy, Imaan Rajan, Jenna Byers, Gennifer Noy, Ally Sutherland, Edie Ventrella, Kaley Roughton, Grace Davis, & Jordan Isler!

Portrait headshot/shoulder shots only. Since our yearbook is a reference for the school year, photos submitted must be a vertical headshot or head and shoulder shot. Photos submitted that are not head/shoulder shots will be zoomed in by the yearbook editors. No photos with pets are allowed.
All seniors are photographed at Falcon Days for their required ID card and the image is sent directly to our yearbook advisor, Ms. Alder, by Dorian to be included in the yearbook.
Some seniors want a different senior photo in the yearbook other than the one Dorian took at Falcon Days:
Senior photos are due October 26, 2018.

Most outside photographers can upload your image for you or can provide seniors with a .jpeg image digitally for the senior to upload themselves.

Again, seniors can submit either the free Dorian photo taken during Falcon Days (or make up day September 11) OR their own professional shots from whichever photographer your family chooses.

If you are concerned about your child's senior photo being uploaded and received please know that the Yearbook Staff will be going through the Balfour file and posting a list of received pictures. We will make an announcement as to where your child can find this list. I will also be posting it on the Yearbook web page, not the photos just a list of names of photos we have received.

If we have an issue with a picture, we will also be contacting the student, so don't fret your child will be taken care of.

Mental Health Matters!
From the world of Jennifer Cruze, MSW, LICSW, Teen Mental Health Counselor with Swedish

How to Help Someone in a Mental Health Crisis
The suicide rate in the United States is steadily climbing and is now the 2nd leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 34. We also know that 1 in 5 youth ages 13-18 have or will have a serious mental illness. Given the prevalence of mental health distress, it is important for all of us to know how to help someone in the midst of a mental health crisis.
Youth Suicide Warning Signs include, but are not limited to
  • Talking about or making plans for suicide
  • Hopelessness about the future
  • Expressing marked emotional pain or distress
  • Showing changes in behavior including:
         * Withdrawal from friends and family
         * Changes in sleep (increased or decreased)
         * Anger or hostility that seems out of character or out of context
         * Recent increased agitation
How to Help:
  • Ask the person directly if they are thinking of harming or killing themselves
  • Ask open ended questions and listen non-judgmentally
  • Check in with the person on a regular basis, whether in person, on the phone, text, email, or letter
  • In an emergency, you can call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department, as well as call a crisis line
Crisis Resources include, but are not limited to:
Additional Resources:
  • Press Pause – excellent ideas for coping skills as well as information on mental health
  • Seize the Awkward – great info on how to get conversations about suicide started
  • Now Matters Now – info about what to do to help manage suicidal thoughts.
To read more about how to help someone in a mental health crisis, read this article from Swedish Medical Center or this onefrom The Woodinville Weekly in September.

News & Updates from Coaches this Week
Falcon Football wins third straight KingCo 4A football title!!
Congratulations to the WHS Football team and coaches!! The team upset Mount Si 16-14 and won their third straight KingCo 4A football title Thursday night the 25th at Mount Si!

Here’s the info published in the Seattle Times October 25 by Matt Massey, Special to The Seattle Times:

“Junior kicker Blake Glessner booted a go-ahead 46-yard field goal, his career best, to give Woodinville the win over top-ranked Mount Si.”

SNOQUALMIE — When the season started, not one offensive starter was in the same place as last season for the Woodinville High School football team.

That group of 11 new starters came a long way in nine games.

The sixth-ranked Falcons defense did its usual work and junior kicker Blake Glessner booted the go-ahead 46-yard field goal with 6:03 left in the game to give his school a 16-14 upset win over top-ranked Mount Si on Thursday night in the KingCo 4A championship game at Mount Si High School.

Woodinville (8-1), the Crown Division champions, captured its third KingCo 4A title in a row with the previous two coming in the regular season. Glessner’s career-best kick was the difference in the end after the Falcons’ offense did their job.

“It’s all my blockers (on the field goal) and I had no nerves at all,” said Glessner, who converted another field goal to pull his team within 14-13 early in the third quarter. “I had full confidence. Going through basketball last season, I really don’t get nervous any more. I didn’t even know what to do with my body after that.

“I just wanted to celebrate with my team. I knew we still had a game to win after that.”

The Falcons’ defense pressured Wildcats quarterback Cale Millen (152 yards passing) all night, made him uncomfortable and never allowed him to get into a rhythm. The Falcons made a defensive stop with 3 minutes, 58 seconds left in the game and ran all but 24 seconds off the clock, surviving a wild pass and pitch-back series on the final play.

“We knew we were losing a lot of seniors, especially offensively this year,” Woodinville quarterback Noah Stifle said after his team avenged a regular-season loss to Mount Si. “We just knew we were going to have to work hard in the offseason and work hard in practices to get that chemistry.”

Said Woodinville head coach Wayne Maxwell after his team limited Mount Si to 235 yards of total offense by harassing Millen: “You have to give a guy like that different looks. He’s too good to do one thing.”

The Falcons recovered a Millen fumble on their own 47 on a scramble play with 9:29 left in the game to set up Glessner’s go-ahead boot. Glessner’s kick midway through the fourth quarter gave Woodinville its first lead of the game at 16-14.

Halloween is next Wednesday the 31st. Costumes are allowed for the school day and at extra-curricular activities within common sense guidelines. Here are some friendly reminders for our students about acceptable clothing that day and, really, any day for them:
  • Student costumes must be appropriate for the school workplace as outlined in the dress code in the Student Handbook.
  • Students must be totally identifiable at all times.
  • No masks or other face coverings.
  • No face paint.
  • Costumes and/or accessories are great so long as they: a) don’t portray or perpetuate stereotypes or denigrate cultures or genders, b) are not distracting to self or others, and/or c) are not like a weapon at all.
We hope everyone enjoys a fun and safe Halloween!
