1. Customize your Canvas dashboard

You may want to choose which courses to display on your Canvas dashboard. Each term's new courses are automatically shown, but you can hide courses you aren't currently teaching by customizing the display.

2. Check due dates & content settings

Your Fall '22 course content has likely been copied from D2L or a different Canvas course shell. Now is an excellent time to check your due dates. Have they been updated? Look over your content, discussions, quizzes, assignments, and grades - does anything need to be adjusted?

3. Visit the academic calendar

It’s also a great idea to review the academic calendar for the upcoming term. Take note of university closures and religious holidays that might impact your course plan.

4. Publish your course

Don’t forget to publish your course at the start of the term. Students can’t get into your Canvas course site if you haven’t published it!

5. Update Zoom

Zoom runs best when you’re using the most up-to-date version.

If you’ve never used your Media Space account, be sure to log in at least once. This allows automatic copies of your Zoom meetings to be stored there.

If you’re holding scheduled Zoom meetings with your class, you may want to schedule your meetings within Canvas. This will create Zoom meeting links for your course that students can access directly in Canvas.

Canvas course for students

The Learning Center has self-paced learning resources for students new to Canvas. We recommend the Canvas Student Video Guides and Manuals — and encouraging them to take the Center’s remote readiness course during the term’s first week. 

Student help desk

The OIT Help Desk offers “just in time” technical support. Contacting the support desk will be helpful for students having trouble logging into Canvas, finding or accessing Canvas materials, and other technical issues. 

Your syllabus statement

Consider adding a Canvas statement to your syllabus.
