Libraries are for everyone!
Ava Goepfert '14 |
What do we mean when we say "libraries are for everyone"? In its simplicity, this statement captures the essence of creating an inclusive, equitable, and powerful educational experience at Gustavus. In order to invite and engage students from every background at Gustavus, we need to provide the resources and support necessary for every student to flourish. And that's not as easy as it sounds! For example, the Patricia Lindell Research Paper Award winners from last academic year used a wide variety of academic materials to advance their research about voter reform. If they didn't have institutional access to journal databases that the Gustavus Library provides, the two student writers would've had to spend nearly $400 of their own money to access the articles that helped them write this paper. One paper = $400! Imagine if each student had to spend hundreds of dollars per paper throughout their entire academic career.
But that's where we all come in! By donating to the Library, we support equal access to these resources so the only thing any student has to spend per paper is brain power, sleepless nights, and maybe a coffee or two. Making sure "libraries are for everyone" means we have to provide the necessary financial support so everyone can access the resources they need to grow in their critical thinking and make an impact with their research, like Birgen and Wyatt did with their paper cited above.
Thank you for being a friend and supporter of the Library. Together we ensure that the Folke Bernadotte Library continues to be for everyone and anyone at Gustavus. And, I'm sure the next time you run into a student writing a paper, they would gladly accept a coffee donation as well.

Student/Alumni Spotlight:
David Eide '23
| Opinion Columnist, The Gustavian Weekly, May 10, 2023
David writes, "I really love the library. I go there even when I don’t have anything to do just to enjoy the atmosphere. I’m going to truly miss the library once I graduate as even though I have a decent library back home, it just can’t quite compare to what we have here at Gustavus."

| Exploring the Costs of Books vs Databases
|
As we make decisions about our collections, there is a constant tension between access versus ownership. For example, we might pay $100 for a book and that item could sit on our shelf for dozens of years, getting checked out hundreds of times. Conversely, we might pay $500 for a one-year subscription to an e-journal and, if we want to continue to have access to that journal, we have to renew our subscription annually. Each year, our database and journal subscription prices increase by an average of 6 percent to 10 percent. According to a 2020 Library Journal article, "On average, academic libraries spent 76 percent of their materials budget on ongoing subscriptions." It is certainly true at the Gustavus Library that our electronic subscriptions consume more and more of our budget each year. As our budget has remained flat or been reduced over the years, this creates an unsustainable situation for us.
