February 2022
Dear Volunteers,
Happy February! Magnolia season is in peak bloom and we are savoring every moment of it. We hope you have been enjoying the weather and every chance you have to get outdoors.

Annual Member & Volunteer Briefing

February 28, 5:30-6:30pm
Register for Zoom
We are so grateful to begin another year with the support of our Member and Volunteer community! You're invited to a briefing by Garden leadership about 2021 accomplishments and 2022 plans, including information on the Gardens of Golden Gate Park. There will be time for your questions in the second part of the program.

In case you missed it, you can read our Annual Report here
Plant Arbor
The Plant Arbor is looking for some more help on Saturdays. Arbor volunteers have the opportunity to learn all about the different plants we sell, helping guests find the perfect one for their garden at home. Plant experience preferred, but not required! Through training and time you will learn all you need to know about the plants we have.
Send an email to volunteer@sfbg.org to get started.

Bookstore
The Bookstore team is always looking for some additional folks to join their team long-term in weekday roles. Our store is small but mighty and welcomes hundreds of visitors every week! If you love talking about the Garden this could be a great role for you.
Reach out to volunteer@sfbg.org to begin.
Join the Events Team
Looking for shorter volunteer shifts, or weekend events? Our wonderful events team is open for more volunteers if you are looking for a new unique way to engage with the Garden - and lots of new events are on the horizon this spring!

These volunteers first go through a screening call, but then are invited to help with special events such as weddings, graduations, and private parties. Sound like something you're interested in?

Slices of Joy

  • Chloe Wieland, Director of Volunteer Engagement for the last 7 years, is leaving the Garden. We are so grateful for everything that Chloe has done to build, support, and grow this incredible program into what it is today! Thank you Chloe, and we will miss you.

  • SFBG made the cover of the latest issue of Public Garden magazine, a publication of American Public Gardens Association.

  • The Cypress that fell in the Ancient Plant Garden was removed. One lane of traffic was closed and diverted to the JTG parking lot to accommodate the crane on MLK Drive. Urban Forestry, Park Patrol, and Garden Staff worked together to make this happen smoothly. The biggest piece of material that was lifted over the tree line weighed 11,000 pounds! The job was completed while crews and the public stayed safe. A huge thank you to the horticulture team and everyone who made this happen!

  • The Board of Supervisors approved the amendment to our Lease and Management Agreement to add the Japanese Tea Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers! We are so excited about this step as we formalize the merger for the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

We can't wait to see what the Spring brings us. Thank you for everything!
Warmly,
Jenn
