Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center |
Operating since 1941, Upham Woods is a model residential outdoor learning center managed by the University of Wisconsin – Madison Division of Extension. The center sits in a prime location on the Wisconsin River, two miles north of the Wisconsin Dells, offering an excellent “river classroom” to study Wisconsin’s natural and cultural history. The center rests on 318 acres of forested land, including a 210-acre island called “Blackhawk Island.” The facility has 14 buildings, including a fully equipped nature center and a raptor enclosure housing educational birds of prey. The center supplies lodging for 200 people, meals, and year-round outdoor education for youth and youth leaders, including environmental lesson plans, summer camp programming, leadership workshops, and other conferences. 2026 4-H American Spirit Experience |
Are you a 4-H member in grades 8–10 who loves history, travel, and making new friends? The 4-H American Spirit Experience might be the perfect adventure for you!
The 4-H American Spirit Experience empowers youth to take ownership of their learning and leadership through a 10-day educational journey exploring history, culture, and civic identity across the East Coast and Canada. While staff and volunteers support and facilitate the experience, youth are at the center, not just as participants, but as leaders, learners, and changemakers. They actively shape the experience by presenting content, leading discussions, reflecting on their learning, and building a vibrant community with peers from across Wisconsin.
2026 Travel Dates: June 18–29, 2026 / July 3–12, 2026
Program Highlights:
*Visit historic sites like Lexington & Concord, Salem, and Gloucester
*Explore American and Canadian culture (passport required!)
*Lead activities and discussions with fellow youth
*Build lifelong friendships and leadership skills
Application Details: Open November 1–30, 2025 in 4H Online: youth and a parent/guardian must complete the application together. Important…A completed application does not guarantee participation. Final selections will consider group composition, eligibility, and application timing.
Estimated Cost: $3,000. Invoices will be sent to counties in April 2026. If interested speak to your 4-H educator about scholarship opportunities.
Eligibility: Open to youth in grades 8–10 (older youth may inquire with Amber Rehberg at amber.rehberg@wisc.edu). Each week is limited to 45 youth, so apply early!

UW Lab Helps Thwart Bird Flu Outbreaks on Dairy Farms |
UW-Madison researchers at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and School of Veterinary Medicine have emerged as national leaders in the response to H5N1 avian influenza on dairy farms. WVDL’s scientists receive, process, prepare, test and log about 5,000 milk samples per month — all to help prevent an H5N1 outbreak among Wisconsin dairy cattle. Full Article

Day of Learning - Door County HCE |
Mission: To provide educational opportunities, improve leadership abilities of members, and offer service to communities.
During the summer months, members provided desserts for community meals and participated in Title Town Days for Girls. Another club hosted its biannual Mending Day on October 25. During the school year, we’ll be reading and distributing books monthly to 87 three-year-olds at 4 different preschools throughout the county.
Looking ahead, here’s our next community-wide activity!
Saturday, November 8, Day of Learning, 1-4:00 pm at Jacksonport Town Hall (3365 Co Rd V). Everyone is to select two sessions of learning fun:
Card Making with Paper Napkins by Pat Long and Trudy Herbst - Make two holiday cards.
Making Mosaics by Krista Johnson & Cheryl Bevins - Use glass or tile pieces you will create your own 5 x 7 mosaic to frame or display.
Cooking with Air Fryers by Teri Madden and Mary Ellen Smith – Learn new recipes and how to use an air fryer
Sewing a potholder bowl by Little Bit LeClair and Linda Gischia – Sew together fabric to make a microwave hot pad bowl. Sewing machines will be available.

Flax (Linum usitatissimum) is a flowering plant that is cultivated for both its seeds and fibers and, occasionally, cut flowers. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants and has been used by humans for thousands of years. Flax is primarily grown in cooler regions of the world, including Europe, North America, and Asia. France, Belgium and Netherlands lead the world in the cultivation of flax for fiber. In North America, flax is predominantly grown for seed with North and South Dakota and Saskatchewan as leading producers. Winter Salt Injury and Salt-Tolerant Landscape Plants |
Sodium chloride (NaCl), or rock salt, is the most commonly used deicer due to its effectiveness, availability, and comparatively low cost. However, it also has significant drawbacks. It’s highly corrosive, causing significant environmental damage and corroding vehicles and concrete. The national cost of damage to vehicles and infrastructure alone is estimated at $3.5 to $7.0 billion annually.

White pine blister rust is a serious, tree-killing disease of eastern white pine and its close relatives (pines with needles in bundles of five). This disease is caused by the exotic (non-native) fungus Cronartium ribicola, which was introduced into North America in the early 1900’s. Winter burn is a common problem of evergreens including those with broad leaves (e.g., boxwood, holly, rhododendron), needles (e.g., fir, hemlock, pine, spruce, yew) and scale-like leaves (e.g., arborvitae, false cypress, juniper) grown in open, unprotected locations and exposed to severe winter conditions. Evergreen plants that are marginally hardy in a location (i.e., not well-adapted to local winter conditions) are at increased risk for winter burn. Winter burn can be so severe that affected plants may die and/or require replacement. Prevention Suggestions
