Education, conservation and determination are the underlying themes in this month's episode of HOME IS HERE.
Dogs are being used to sniff out invasive species across the state. K9 trainer Kyoko Johnson, founder of the nonprofit organization Conservation Dogs of Hawaiʻi, takes us into the mountains above Oʻahu's North Shore searching for the invasive devil weed plant. Then, Buddy Bess recalls the "coincidence of events" that led him to start Bess Press in 1979. Since then, Bess Press has published hundreds of page-turners that highlight the people, stories and cultures of Hawaiʻi and the greater Pacific. Finally, 14-year-old Genshu Price explains why he has taken on the daunting task of collecting and recycling millions of bottles and cans.

Final Thought… Do you remember what you were doing when you were 14 years-old? Were you a know-it-all, who focused on yourself, constantly tested boundaries and spent more time in the ocean than you probably should have? I know someone like that…
According to WebMD, the average 14-year-old boy is experiencing a spurt in height, weight and strength, and a voice change that is deeper and occasionally "cracks." He is likely developing acne, absorbed in social media, texting and gaming, and probably dealing with mood swings and peer pressure.
Then there is Genshu Price, who is not your average 14-year-old boy. Sure, his voice is changing and he is taller and stronger than he was a year ago, but this young teenager is not self-absorbed and he definitely is not spending his free time in front of a computer monitor.
Genshu's inspirational story, featured in this month's Home is Here, will blow you away and his tenacity and focus will leave you breathless. No, there is nothing average about this 14-year-old boy. There are more than a millions reasons why he is not… and counting.
