FY27 HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS MOVE FORWARD WITH CUTS TO SCIENCE AND FOREIGN ASSISTANCE
House appropriators continued advancing fiscal year 2027 spending bills this week, with the Commerce‑Justice‑Science (CJS) and Legislative Branch subcommittees clearing their measures for full committee consideration beginning May 13. The CJS bill proposes significant reductions to research accounts compared to FY26. The House bill proposes cutting NSF to $7 billion (a 20 percent or $1.75 billion decrease from FY26) and reducing several NASA accounts, including Science ($6 billion, down $1.25 billion), Aeronautics ($850 million, down $85 million), and Space Technology ($913 million, down $7 million), while flat‑funding Space Grant at $58 million.
Separately, the full committee approved the Agriculture‑FDA bill, though Democrats raised concerns about food safety policy impacts and whether the measure sufficiently protects FDA’s vaccine review authority. The committee also sent to the full House a $47.32 billion State Department and national security bill, cutting overall funding by roughly six percent and reducing foreign assistance and global programs.
