Managing Population Health, by Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, MA
At a recent FAS Town Hall, we were fortunate to hear from Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, MAS, Vice Dean for Population Health & Health Equity, UCSF School of Medicine and Chair, Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As her title suggests, her work at UCSF spans across multiple interrelated fields of health, from direct individual patient care to next-generation solutions for whole populations. She advocated for the health of our most vulnerable populations, which surprisingly includes adolescents. Learn more about her work on pophealth.ucsf.edu and her slide deck (below).
Dr. Bibbins-Domingo’s answer to one question left everyone talking after the program: What have you changed in your personal life because of your research? Her answer: watching salt and sugar, particularly in processed foods or “when someone else controls the amount” of salt and sugar versus food you prepare and season yourself. She chooses lower sodium and sugar options of sauces and bread, which are sneaky forms of high salt and sugar.

From the SVCSenior vice chancellor Paul Jenny reinforced the four goals Chancellor Hawgood’s shared at last month’s State of the University address and provided examples of how our FAS True North and Strategic Priorities are interwoven.

Value Improvement As UCSF experiences unprecedented growth, the FAS Value Improvement Program seeks to create efficiencies and increase our capacity to serve the demand for FAS services. Sixty-nine proposals were submitted in Phase I, and Phase II proposals are due this Friday, November 22.

True North Progress
True North is how FAS delivers on the UCSF Mission. How are we doing so far this fiscal year? We are on track for 5 metrics, not on track with 3 metrics and 5 metrics are pending results.
