How to Ask for and Structure a Speech and Debate Class
Offering a speech and debate class can give your program stability, increase participation, and offer greater work/life balance. Our latest self-paced NSDA Learn course will help you prepare to advocate for a class. When you enroll online for free, you'll learn to:
- Showcase student and family interest.
- Demonstrate how a class helps your school achieve its goals.
- Determine the positioning and structure of your course.
Make a pitch incorporating data and student voices.
- Plan for the year ahead if your request is granted or prepare to adjust your pitch if your request is tabled.
Read the Competition Rules Board Minutes
The Competition Rules Board met on January 10. Read the minutes for full details. Important updates include the decision to remove the requirement that Congress judges must be unaffiliated at the district tournament, plans to replace the novice Lincoln-Douglas topic in time for next season, and the addition of a tiebreaker to National Tournament school awards.
Celebrate Excellence in Speech and Debate
These awards are a special way to recognize excellence, offer a boost to new or rarely celebrated members, and uplift the members of your community who make speech and debate great.
Middle School (National) » Recognize a coach or administrator who champions speech and debate! Nominations for these national-level awards are due May 1.
High School (District to National) » Each winner of the following district awards is automatically entered into the running for the national-level award when reported by your district chair.
District deadlines vary, so be sure to check with your local leadership about when nominations are due. District chairs must report district winners to us by April 16 for national award consideration!

Nominate a Coach for Hall of Fame
The highest honor for any high school speech and debate coach is election to the NSDA Hall of Fame. Each year, we seek nominations from member coaches like you! Individuals with 25 years of NSDA coach membership prior to the start of Nationals (e.g., a merit date of June 11, 1998, or earlier), or who are retired from coaching and teaching, are eligible. Submit a nomination by February 1.
Don't Miss the Last-Chance Qualifier for All Districts-Eligible Students
The NSDA Last-Chance Qualifier is an opportunity for students who did not qualify through their district tournament to have a chance to attend the 2023 National Tournament. Students must be districts-eligible but do not need to have attended districts to participate; schools must have had at least one entry at districts. Participation is FREE, and all National Tournament main events and Big Questions will be offered. Enter up to four of your school’s students in each event (up to six in BQ) for a chance to be a top-placing competitor at the Last-Chance Qualifier and earn a spot at the National Tournament! The second annual NSDA Last-Chance Qualifier will be held online on April 27-29. Details and Registration »
