LagunaHonda.org/COVID19/Chinese

Dear Laguna Honda Residents and Families,
At Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH), we strive to create a healing community where residents are cared for with compassion, dedication, and professionalism. However, we know that no matter how hard we work to protect our Laguna Honda community, life is filled with everyday challenges. The year 2020 has certainly presented us with more of these challenges than normal.
Our firefighters are bravely battling wildfires across California as hurricanes create destruction along the Gulf Coast. COVID-19 is still claiming over a thousand lives a day with no clear end in sight. And yet again, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, we are reminded that the struggle for true justice in America is far from being achieved. Life is precious. And yes, Black Lives Matter. It must be explicitly stated because, in the United States, Black lives do not seem to matter to many in positions of power and law enforcement.
During my early days as CEO at Laguna Honda, I wrote to you about the senseless death of Mr. George Floyd. Less than three months later, we are faced with yet another instance of police brutality; the tragic police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mr. Blake was shot seven times in the back by police in an episode that could easily have been avoided. I pray for Mr. Blake’s recovery and for his family, especially his young children, as he fights for his life in the hospital.
Mr. Floyd's tragic and horrific death was a wake-up call for America, and yet we continue to witness blatant examples of police brutality across the country. We should all be concerned when we see obvious examples of mistreatment and injustice.
As the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so profoundly stated “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Even if you are not an African American, I hope you will empathize with your African American colleagues during this difficult moment. In my role, I am naturally concerned about the safety and wellbeing of all our employees; however, this is a moment when the African American community needs all our support. So, let’s stand in solidarity in this moment for our African American colleagues and continue to do so whenever we see injustice anywhere in America.
Despite the madness often on display in the surrounding world, I take solace in the caring community that we have created here at Laguna Honda.
As some of you may know, we first opened our doors in 1866 as an Almshouse, a place for people with nowhere else to go. Many of our early residents were chronically ill and impoverished. Forty years later, during the 1906 earthquake, Laguna Honda cared for thousands of displaced residents. In the 1980s, as AIDS and HIV devastated communities across the country, Laguna Honda established the Positive Care Unit and helped set a national example for skilled nursing care for people with HIV. And now, in 2020, Laguna Honda is displaying great leadership in our fight against COVID-19.
Our character as an organization has been revealed by the challenging events of the pandemic and by the year 2020.
If I have learned one thing during 2020, I have learned that Laguna Honda Hospital is truly a special place. Yes, we have a beautiful hospital situated on a picturesque campus, but that is not what makes Laguna Honda special. Our storied history is what makes Laguna Honda special. The community of residents, resident families, and staff that we have created is also what makes us special.
And for me personally, it is a joy to be a part of this family and community.
Updated COVID-19 Numbers
At Laguna Honda, we have had 83 total COVID-19 cases since our first known case in March—23 resident cases, of which 22 have recovered, and 60 staff cases, of which 54 have recovered.
As a reminder, COVID-19 dashboards with LHH’s staff and resident case numbers are available online at LagunaHonda.org/COVID19
Please continue to help us fight this virus by social distancing, wearing a face covering, and washing your hands frequently.
If you have any questions about LHH’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic or the safety and wellness of our community, your resident care team is available.
Please keep healthy and safe.
