Classes Cancelled for the Remainder of Thursday, 12/7/2017

As announced in the Chancellor's message earlier this afternoon, classes have been cancelled for the remainder of the day. While the campus is open and operational, many services will be closed or modified given the cancellation of classes. We are writing to share detailed information about resource availability; please review the information below carefully.

Departments with Modified Services

The following departments remain accessible today, Thursday, 12/7/2017, but may have modified services or hours.

Admissions - The Visitor Center will remain open as regularly scheduled.
CARE: Campus Advocacy, Resources & Education - Advocates remain available to survivors 24 hours a day by calling the confidential Advocacy line at 805-893-4613.
Children's Centers - Will remain open until normal closing time (5:30 p.m.). Due to the poor air quality, families are encouraged to pick up their child/children early if that is possible.
College of Creative Studies - Limited staffing during regular hours.
College of Letters & Science Academic Advising - Doors open 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and phones answered 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) - Urgent mental health services available until 4:30 p.m. in Building 599. Most scheduled appointments will be rescheduled unless urgent. Phone consultation is availbale 24 hours a day by calling 805-893-4411.
ONDAS Student Center- Open until 3:00 p.m. today.
Recreation Center* - Open as regularly scheduled (until 11:00 p.m., see see website), except for pool, outdoor spaces, and the multipurpose rink in the MAC, which is serving as a Red Cross shelter for displaced residents.
Residential Dining - Open for regular meal service (for students with meal plans).
Student Health - Modified services (urgent care, pharmacy, and scheduled appointments) available until 4:30 p.m. (and by appointment only, 4:30-7:30 p.m.).
Student Mental Health Coordination Services - The Distressed Student consultation line will be available during regular business hours (until 5:00 p.m.) by calling 805-893-3030.
Student Resource Building (SRB)* - Building open with curtailed hours (until 6:00 p.m.) - most departments are closed; please see specific department information below.
Transfer Student Center - Open until 3:00 p.m. today.
UCSB Library* - Open as regularly scheduled (see website); please use the main entrance located on the Patio adjacent to the Summit Café.

*These facilities have back-up generators that will provide lighting in case of a power outage. Facilities will remain open to students as indicated, but services may be limited.

Availability of Masks

A limited supply of masks was made available for distribution at various locations, including residence halls, the Recreation Center, Associated Students (including the Pardall Center), and Student Health. Supplies are limited on campus and throughout the Central Coast, but new masks have been ordered and will become available as they are delivered. For up-to-date information regarding masks and mask distribution, please refer to the Student Health website.

Student Health reminds us: Even if you are not able to obtain a mask, please do not panic. Brief exposures will not cause any harm. The best advice is to remain indoors as much as possible and avoid strenuous activity outdoors, and stay well hydrated.

Where possible, department staff will monitor email in order to address urgent issues.

In Case of Power Outage

Southern California Edison additional power outages may result from the ongoing fires.
Estimated power restoration information related to these specific areas will be updated as it becomes available. For additional information on outages customers can check sce.com/outages.

Select Tips for Navigating Major Outages from SCE:

There are reports of individuals posing as Edison employees going to residences in fire areas attempting to enter homes. SCE employees will never enter a residence or ask for cash payments for services. If you suspect suspicious activity, immediately call police.
Remember to check emergency supplies to be sure you have a battery-operated radio, a flashlight and fresh batteries. Do not use candles for lighting as they pose a fire hazard.
Do not use any equipment inside that is designed for outdoor heating or cooking. Such equipment can emit carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

The Division of Student Affairs is opening a UCSB Parent Hotline for information about the campus response to the Thomas Fire. Please let your parents know that they can contact us today at (805) 893-3901 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. (PST).
