Your Friendly Neighborhood Mascot

Grizz has one of the most recognizable faces on campus. Debuting during halftime of the 2006 Homecoming football game, Grizz was inspired by Puget Sound’s original athletics teams, known as the Grizzlies, and sports a classic lumberjack look: denim and plaid, plus a maroon beanie reminiscent of those worn by first-year students until 1961. Look for Grizz around campus and say hello!

Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Jennifer Utrata was quoted in an article in The New York Times last week. The article, "Learning to Become a Better Grandfather" explores how today's grandfathers are taking a more active role in child-rearing than their predecessors. Utrata, who is currently writing a book about intensive grandparenting, shared that even when grandfathers are involved in child care, they are still likely to look to a spouse to take on the bulk of the care.

Prison Archives and Public Memories

Last week, students in Visiting Associate Professor Tanya Erzen's Crime, Law, and Justice Studies 370 course visited the Washington State Archives in Olympia, Wash. At the archives, they looked at rarely-seen documents from the state's complicated history around gender and incarceration, including material from the Washington State Training School for Girls and the Washington Corrections Center for Women dating back to the early 1900s. In addition to exploring the history and evolution of the state's criminal justice system, students are also getting hands-on experience conducting research and engaging with primary sources. Learn about the crime, law, and justice studies minor.
