A message from President Rick Bailey
SOU President Rick Bailey
Dear RaiderFamily,
By now, most of our campus community has likely either heard about the board meeting last night, read about it in the press or spoken with colleagues about it. If you missed it, you can view the slides or play back the board meeting here. The news about the task ahead of us and the challenges we face are difficult and sobering. We are confronted with an existential challenge, to be sure, but one we can and will overcome.
This is a pivotal moment for our university, and I want to be clear about our commitment to students’ future. First and foremost: SOU is not closing. We are transforming to serve you, and while change can bring uncertainty, we guarantee a level of support and service that students will find nowhere else. Our promise is simple: if your specific major is impacted by these changes, we will personally work with you to find a clear pathway to graduation or connect you with a partner institution to ensure your degree remains on track.
Now that we have seen the themes and findings that will likely shape the draft plan, we have an idea of the direction that we need to go – even though much is yet to be determined. Through hard work and cooperation, we are building a resilient university that gives every student the practical skills and creativity needed to thrive in a changing economy.
For our students who are considering fall registration, which opens up next week, please register!  Your registration will help us determine the path forward, and will help to ensure that we are serving your best interests. As I said yesterday, I still believe in my mind and my heart that for most of you, your best path is still with us at SOU. In any case, we will remain laser focused on your success, no matter where your optimal path takes you.
Especially in the weeks ahead, I encourage all of us to seek assistance if needed from the many resources that are available. For students, counseling for anxiety, mental health crises and other concerns is available through our La Clinica Student Health & Wellness Center; in-person or remote sessions can be scheduled through the online health portal or by calling the La Clinica SHWC at (541) 494-4875. Assistance is also available from our Care Coordinators Office. SOU benefits-eligible employees may visit the Human Resources website for information and resources supporting mental and emotional well-being. Employees can also seek guidance through Canopy, our Employee Assistance Program, by calling 1-800-433-2320, texting 503-850-7721, emailing info@canopywell.com or visiting the organization’s website.
Times like these, with the emotions we’re experiencing, don’t always come with gratitude. But I am incredibly grateful for the service our faculty and staff have given to our students and to each other, especially now. You’ve given suggestions, ideas and recommendations for how best to navigate these times. It is a reminder of how fortunate I am to serve alongside you. You are all loved and deeply appreciated. There is a path for us to move forward, and we will chart it together.
With love and respect,
Rick Bailey
