LST News St. Jude receives ‘exceptional’ score during $36M grant renewal
Every five years, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital undergoes a review by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to renew the hospital’s NCI-awarded Comprehensive Cancer Center grant. The grant, worth $36 million, is tied to St. Jude’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. St. Jude received an “exceptional” score by the NCI in 2013 and this week was again rated “exceptional” for 2018. Dr. James Downing, president and CEO of St. Jude, cited the Cancer Center as a “point of pride” for the institution and noted the center helps “educate the next generation of cancer researchers.”
Senate Has the Power to Get Miracle Medications to Opioid Addicts
In a post for LinkedIn, BIO president and CEO James Greenwood urges the U.S. Senate to take action on legislation that could help millions of opioid addicted Americans. The bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives this past summer, would direct the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to create an Opioid Action Plan. As he writes, thanks to our increased understanding of neuroscience and biotech breakthroughs, medication-assisted treatment has already been approved by the USDA which can reduce opioid cravings, dampen euphoric side effects and diminish withdrawal symptoms. Currently 4 in 10 opioid addicted Americans are covered through Medicaid services as most insurances carriers will not cover such treatments. This bill will allow the CMS to fund more treatments that millions of Americans need.
GeoAir’s drones used to help Grainger County tomato farmers
The growing season brings with it a passion for vegetables of all types. In this region, there’s a particular interest in Grainger County tomatoes. Like any crop, tomatoes are susceptible to various diseases including something called tomato leaf mold. Immediate treatment is important so that the foliage isn’t dramatically infected or there will be a significant decrease in the amount of tomatoes yielded. Alex Adams is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GeoAir, a local startup that is utilizing drones to help collect airborne samples over fields of crops. The data collected via drones is used to create a heat map, which identifies mold hot spots. This information allows growers to spot treat the areas instead of the entire crop, saving time, money and crop production.
