Detective in Residence
Every day is a new challenge for Residence Life Administrative Specialist Hillary Jade ’06—and that’s how she prefers it. Whether she’s communicating with students, parents, or staff members; doing graphic design; navigating customer service; or mentoring student staff members, Jade loves connecting with Loggers and solving thorny residence life mysteries. This year, there are even more problems to solve, as the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of living on campus. Through it all, Jade aims to make the residential experience as smooth and transparent as possible. Outside of her work on campus, Jade is a passionate and formidable mini-golf player, a stand-up comedy enthusiast, and a dog walker and pet sitter, and she recently got really into The Great British Baking Show.

HACKS & CHOPS William D. and Flora McCormick Chair in Biophysics and Associate Professor of Physics Rachel Pepper is lead author of a new study published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface examining the feeding rates of microscopic sessile suspension feeders. The study found that feeding flows and clearance rates are profoundly different for organisms in ambient flow—their natural state—versus in still water, which is where nearly all previous studies’ results were obtained.
