Oakdale in Film Program
2018 marks the 27th year since Oakdale closed its doors just 4 years shy of 100 years in operation. For those of you who weren’t in the area or maybe even alive when Oakdale was open (1895-1991), Lapeer was home to a training school that had a larger population than the actual city!
At its peak, Oakdale encompassed several thousand acres with over 120 buildings, was home to more than 4500 residents and was the largest employer in the County. Today, all that remains are 5 buildings (Mott Community College, Rolland Warner Middle School, Chatfield Charter School, 2 staff houses) and a cemetery.
The Marguerite deAngeli Branch Library will behosting a program Oakdale in Film on Saturday March 3rd at 10am. The program will feature a brief slide show about the history of the home followed by 3 short documentaries. Registration is required. The book Oakdale: the Lapeer State Home by Laura Fromwiller and Jan Gillis is available for check out at your local LDL branch.
The reference section of the deAngeli branch also has several binders of newspaper articles, pictures and other materials available for viewing as well as directions to Oakdale’s cemetery (available upon request).
