Want to Plant a Tree? Wait Until Fall!

Trees ready to be unloaded for planting in late October, and a giant sequoia that was planted at Rigler School earlier this February.

Warmer weather is on the way, and that means it is time to STOP planting trees from May 1st to October 1st. If you have a Tree Removal and Replanting Permit issued during that time, you should plan to wait for the cooler, wetter months to plant a replacement tree.

It may seem strange for Urban Forestry to ask you not to plant trees when the weather is so nice, but there is a good reason! Trees planted during hot, dry weather are more likely to die.

From fall to early spring, however, temperatures are cooler, there is usually abundant rainfall, and many trees are not actively growing, or growing only moderately. This allows the tree to have time to adjust to its new surroundings before focusing its energy on new growth and staying cool.
Remember to mark your calendars to plant your new tree once the May 1st - October 1st deferral period has ended! Click here for more information on planting trees in Portland.

This May, watch for Pop-up Arboreta in Cathedral, Irving, and Ventura Parks!

July 2017 view of the St. Johns Bridge from Cathedral Park Needles of the deciduous conifer, the golden larch.
Last summer, during the Park Tree Inventory, volunteers and staff agreed that many of our park trees are worthy of being part of an arboretum.
For the month of May, Urban Forestry will be installing informational signs on select trees in Cathedral, Irving, and Ventura Parks. This will turn each park into a “Pop-up” Arboretum!
You can explore the signs in these Pop-up Arboreta on your own, with friends and family, or enjoy one of our guided tours. Urban Forestry staff and ISA Certified Arborist Patrick Key will lead walks to explore the trees we found in Ventura and Cathedral Parks. No registration required.
Guided tree walks with Urban Forestry staff and certified arborists:
  • Ventura Park, SE 113th Ave. and Stark St. — May 5th, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Cathedral Park, N Edison St. and Pittsburg Ave. — May 19th, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Tours every hour, on the hour!

Tulip tree flower Western red cedar cones and foliage.
The flower from a tulip tree and the rosebud-shaped cones of a Western redcedar are some of the details waiting to be discovered in our parks. What tree will you discover at a Pop-up Arboretum?
