Help Us "Shut the Sash" to Save Energy
Fume hoods are ventilated enclosures used in laboratories to protect users from fumes and vapors by removing air from the space. These devices are essential for safety, but they also use a lot of energy — a single fume hood can use the same amount of energy in a year as three to four houses! By engaging in the "Shut the Sash" campaign and closing fume hoods when not in use, you can reduce energy use, increase efficiency, and create a safer lab environment. Visit the Office of Sustainability's "Shut the Sash" page to request "Shut the Sash" fume hood stickers for your lab and learn more about sustainable lab practices.

Sustainability Spotlight on Tech Square Phase 3
Office of Sustainability team members recently toured Tech Square Phase 3 (TS3) to learn how sustainability is integrated into the building's design. Currently on track for LEED v4 Platinum certification, the building boasts sustainability features such as a cistern system for rainwater capture and reuse in restrooms and cooling towers, low-carbon concrete, super high-performance glazing, maximized natural lighting, updated recycling receptacles, and bike storage. In addition, TS3 has the following performance measures:
-
Low Energy Use Intensity (EUI) — EUI is a common benchmarking metric used to compare relative energy use across buildings of different sizes, with lower EUIs representing better energy performance. Georgia Tech's campus average EUI is approximately 106. TS3's expected EUI is 24, nearly half that of other new campus office buildings.
-
Low Embodied Carbon — Embodied carbon measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the extraction, production, and transport of building materials. TS3's embodied carbon of 63 lbs/sf falls well below the Carbon Leadership Forum's structure-only dataset average of 89 lbs/sf.
-
Low Potable Water Use — Georgia Tech's average potable water use for non-residential buildings is 21 gal/sf/year. TS3's cistern system and efficient water fixtures decrease potable water use by 7x the campus average.
