Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28, NKJV

Breast Cancer Is the Second Most Common Cancer in Women

Thankfully, awareness and support for women diagnosed with breast cancer has improved over the last few decades. Still, many women don’t know their family history or when to start breast cancer screenings.

Here are some helpful tips:
  • Get routine breast cancer screening exams to find cancer early—when it’s easiest to treat. Most recommendations suggest that women ages 50 to 74 get a screening mammogram every other year, but those who are at higher risk may need to be screened earlier and more often. Women who are 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor about when to start and how often to get a mammogram. Ask your care team what’s right for you.

  • If breast cancer runs in your family, ask your care team about genetic screening and testing.

  • Take steps to help lower the chance of getting breast cancer.
    • Be active and move your body most days—a brisk walk is great exercise
    • Keep a healthy weight
    • Eat healthy foods and limit alcohol
    • Get enough sleep
    • Don’t smoke or vape, and steer clear of secondhand smoke
    • Tell your doctor about your family history of breast cancer

Save the date for the mammogram bus with Invision Diagnostics scheduled to visit Boone and North Wilkesboro during November and December. Be on the lookout for information about registration information from your HR team.

It’s time to get your flu shot!
You should take the flu seriously. Each year, it is a cause of hospitalization and even death for millions. The flu vaccine can help keep you safe.

The Samaritan's Purse Family Medicine Clinics will be offering flu shot events in October. Go to the registration link to make an appointment.

Boone Registration
Tuesday, October 24, 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

N. Wilkesboro Registration

Friday, October 27, 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

  • The flu vaccine is free!

  • Remember that it takes about two weeks after getting your shot for your body to build up protection, so don’t wait for flu cases to spike to get vaccinated.

  • You cannot get the flu from the vaccine.

  • Even though you can still get the flu once vaccinated, symptoms will be milder and not last as long.

  • It is recommended for anyone ages 6 months and up to get vaccinated.

  • If you are over 65, or have certain health conditions, it is especially important for you to get vaccinated. Talk with your doctor to learn more about when and how you should get vaccinated.
