Labor Day is Monday, September 7. This holiday began in the late 19th century and honors the social and economic achievements of American workers. Labor Day was first celebrated unofficially on September 5, 1882, in New York City.
|
Peter J. McGuire (from Camden, New Jersey) and Matthew Maguire (from Paterson, NJ) have both been credited with starting the Labor Day holiday. Both men, who were Irish Catholic, contributed significantly to the early version of this holiday. Labor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, and other public gatherings, especially over the long, three-day Labor Day weekend. For many Americans, it represents the end of the summer and the start of the back-to-school season.

Located on the second floor of the University Center, the Campus Inclusion and Community Center supports our mission by offering a welcoming space where students, faculty, and staff can gather, learn, and build relationships. The center promotes belonging, collegiality, and cultural engagement in alignment with Strategic Plan Pillar 2. The space is open Monday–Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and all are welcome. Join us September 3 for Commuter Birthday Celebrations.
