Orange County assumed recycling collection for the Urban routes on July 1st, 2024. Recycling collection within the town limits of Hillsborough, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill (including the portion of Chapel Hill within Durham County) is now collected by the dark green Orange County Solid Waste trucks instead of the light green GFL trucks.
Recycling collection days will not change. However, collection times may alter. Please keep your cart out from 7am - 5pm on your recycling collection day.

Salvage Sheds Schedule Update |
Effective July 1, 2024, the Salvage Sheds at all Waste and Recycling Center locations will NOT be closed on Sundays. Sanitization of the Salvage Sheds and maintenance of the facilities will be conducted on Wednesdays.

Tires cannot be recycled in curbside/single-stream recycling, but they can be recycled another way. Orange County offers tire drop-off for Orange County residents at all five Waste & Recycling Centers. Residents can also drop off tires at the Orange County Landfill (see limitations and guidelines below). Orange County’s tire program receives tires from residents, auto repair companies, farmers, and more.

A monthly review of the most common and obscure findings in recycling carts.
As part of the Recycling Stars Program, Solid Waste staff evaluate curbside recycling carts to educate residents on proper recycling. The program’s goal is to improve the overall quality and quantity of recyclables collected from households around the County. Residents that recycle properly are awarded a star sticker. Residents also receive feedback on unaccepted items found in their recycling cart via a letter or ‘Oops’ tag attached to their cart. For more information on the Recycling Stars Program, please visit our website.
