Emily Tsiang on Cities, Agency, and Experiential Learning

• On Wednesday, Professor Yao Wang from NYU Tandon gave a lecture as part of the Distinguished Women in Computing Speaker Series. She spoke about using AI for video streaming and health, highlighting recent research on deep learning for video streaming and health in the NYU Tandon Video Lab. She showcased AI-driven innovations in health applications including work on decoding speech from intracranial neural signals, with the long-term goal of developing neuroprosthetics for individuals with speech impairments.
• On March 6, Jiahui Health and NYU Shanghai jointly launched a pilot international medical mentorship program. The program connects pre-health students from NYU Shanghai with physicians from Jiahui Health as their mentors, and offers students opportunities to gain hands-on medical experiences. At the launch event, Provost Bei Wu emphasized the value of real-life experiences in the medical field. She said she hopes the program will help students cultivate “the scientific curiosity and the humanistic perspective that great physicians require,” and urged students to approach the experience with “equal measures of curiosity and humility.”
• On Wednesday, a forum on Global Finance in Transition: Talent, Standards, and the Future was held to mark the launch of a partnership between NYU Shanghai and CFA Institute. At the forum, senior leaders engaged in a timely dialogue on how the finance industry is evolving and what this means for universities, employers, and aspiring professionals. The event also gave special recognition to a NYU Shanghai student team which won second place in the Shanghai finals of the 2025–2026 CFA Institute Research Challenge, advancing to the sub-regional round.
