University of Oregon
Dear UO students,
The start of the new school year is just around the corner, and we know many of you are ready for classes to start. We are very excited for your arrival on campus and ready to support you in your personal and academic successes!
On a related note, we wanted to address some news you may have heard in the media recently. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) informed the State of Oregon’s seven public universities that they will strike beginning Monday, September 30, should an agreement not be reached before that day. SEIU employees are a valued and important part of the University of Oregon community, providing a range of services in support of our mission. The university respects the right of its unionized employees to strike.
The seven universities are continuing to bargain with the union to reach an agreement. The next mediation session is scheduled for Thursday, September 26. We remain optimistic that we can reach a settlement prior to September 30. The University of Oregon will continue to provide information through the UO’s official news outlet Around the O, on the HR website, and through direct emails, if necessary.
In the event that our classified union does strike, the UO has plans in place to ensure that vital services for students and other members of the campus community will continue. We will prioritize essential student services such as housing, dining, urgent health care, and crisis response services; essential campus services such as security, utilities, information services, and payroll; and maintaining vital research activities and holding academic classes. Other university employees will step in as necessary to ensure continuity and limit disruptions for our students.
We look forward to seeing you and your families upon your arrival to campus in the coming days. If our team can support you or answer any questions, please call us.
