Coding Club Coming to Nederland Library!

As a recipient of the Code Club in Small & Rural Libraries grant, we are thrilled to announce the first session of our upcoming NCL Spring Coding Club!
In this program, students will use interactive, user friendly software to learn the basics of Java, HTML, and Python.
Since we only have 10 computers at NCL, these sessions will be limited to 10 students. The first session will run on Thursdays,  Feb 6 - Feb 27, 3:30 - 5. As we get a feel for the flow of the program, more sessions will be added.
Email Mike for more info, or register here. If the session fills up, please add your name to the waitlist and your registration will be given priority as new sessions begin.

Toy Library launching in February

One of the most powerful ways children learn is through play.
Beginning in February, NCL will have a variety of themed toy backpacks for you to check out, just as you would any other materials. Our Toy backpacks will be searchable through our catalog, and available in our children's section.  Play, Return, Repeat!
For more information, please contact us here.

Afterschool at NCL is Back!!

We are again offering afterschool programs and workshops at the library. As we start this year, we decided to try new formats as well as new programs. Here's a look at what's to come.

Wednesdays

Crazy 8's Math Club: Jan 8 - Feb 26: Always a crowd favorite. Students will explore hands-on activities that help reinforce math standards for grades kindergarten through 2nd. Along with engaging activities, students are invited to keep consumable items from the class - the glowsticks being one of the most popular! Snack included, this session is limited to 15 students, so please register soon. Grades K-2

Thursdays

Chess & Board Games: Jan 9 - Jan 30: Students will learn the basics of chess and sportsmanship as well as enjoy the opportunity to learn other board games and converse over non-video game gaming. Like the good 'ol days! Snack will be provided. If you or your family enjoy a game at home please let us know. We would love to add it to our growing in-house game collection! This session is limited to 15 students so please register soon. K-5

Storytimes
 Movers and Shakers
best for ages 0-2
Wednesdays, 10:30am - 11:30 am
As children acquire language skills and concepts, we strive to incorporate those skills and concepts into many fun topics and socially supportive lessons. While we do want our children to be exposed to literacy topics and concepts, it is also very important to understand the developmental milestones our children meet. In addition, we provide time for free play and exploration. This is a holistic approach to educating children in a safe, fun and engaging environment.
Friday Funday   best for ages 1 and over
Fridays, 10:30 - 11:30 am
This is a fun storytime based around the love of books and leisure. Designed for children who are able to hold focus on a story (at least for a bit!) we will hear some wonderful stories both classic and contemporary, usually outside, weather permitting. This storytime will include an activity or craft, depending on the theme and general capacity of the group. Think of it as a flex session in that we will be adapting to the group and addressing age appropriate skills, interests, and abilities.
Yoga Storytime will be held on the 3rd Thursday of the month, with our next sessions on January 16.
This interactive program infuses literacy and storytelling with movements and mindfulness lessons geared toward our younger friends. These sessions will feature NCL staff as well as guest presenters from the community and run about 30 minutes with a free play session afterwards.
