Play the Bad News Game (20-30 minutes)
In this game, students take on the role of fake news-monger as they drop all pretense of ethics and choose a path that builds their persona as an unscrupulous media magnate. The goal of the game is to expose the tactics and manipulation techniques that are used to mislead people and build up a following. Bad News works as a psychological “vaccine” against disinformation: playing it builds cognitive resistance against common forms of manipulation that you may encounter online.

|
Introduce students to the game using the slides and instruct them to take notes on the “badges” they get while playing and their total number of followers at the end of the game to create a small competition among students. Have each student play through the game at least once, although you may have some or all students play through a second time in order to improve their score. Finally, discuss the game as class using the questions on the slides. Full lesson »

Save Time: Import Your NSDA Roster into Tabroom.com
|
Once you've entered your new students for the season onto your NSDA roster, it's time to connect the dots with Tabroom.com. Linking your Tabroom.com student roster to your NSDA account will allow you to automatically import your students to Tabroom.com. This also enables auto-pointing, where a student's points from tournaments hosted on Tabroom.com can be posted automatically and approved rather than being hand entered.

Free Online After-School Practice Opportunities for Students
|
Your team is invited to join fellow speech and debate students across the nation for a variety of free, after-school, online practice sessions through the Springboard Series. During these online scrimmages, there is one round of speech and debate events and one session of Congress. Then, students receive written feedback and ranks just like at an in-person tournament.
As a bonus, students who are NSDA members will earn tournament points for participating! However, there is no membership requirement to participate. This is an excellent opportunity for any team to practice their events in front of an audience pre-competition and receive essential feedback and experience to grow their confidence and performance. Check the full schedule for details; there are four events per month September through November.
